Jennifer Hudson will be joining Smash for a multi-episode arc!

“We’re thrilled to have Jennifer Hudson coming to Smash,” NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said in a statement. “This series is a showcase for some of the best musical talent in the business and that’s a fitting description for Jennifer. Her character will represent someone who reached their Broadway dream but also paid a price for it.”

The 30-year-old singer and actress will first appear in the Season 2 premiere of the drama, which co-stars Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty.

“First Dreamgirls, now Smash. I have no doubt Jennifer will continue to deliver even more inspiration to the audience responsible for giving us a second season on NBC,” executive producer Steven Spielberg also shared.

Here’s what the Smash stars had to share:

Katharine, on relating to her character’s time with understudies: “I’ve experienced some aggressive behavior. That is what this show is all about. Everybody wants to be a star.”

Megan, on real-life auditions: “I’ve done a million of these readings and been told, ‘You are wonderful. We love you. But we need a star in this part.”

Co-star Debra Messing on her desire to perform in A Chorus Line before Will & Grace: “It was what I wanted for life. I was a good dancer, not a great dancer … I flapped my arms around. They said, ‘Okay, thank you.’ I was released and my dreams of A Chorus Line were shattered.”

The 28-year-old actress’s Smash co-stars, Debra Messing and Megan Hilty, joined her at the press event.

Here’s what the 28-year-old Smash star had to share:

On making your own rules: “After my third semester of school, I came to Los Angeles just in time for pilot season and had 15 to 20 extra pounds on me. I was told, ‘Just lose some weight and you’ll be golden.’ But I knew I had talent. I went on [American] Idol because it was about finding the voice, not about looks. I didn’t know how else to get to that level.”

On overnight success being a myth: “After Idol, I met with Steven Spielberg, who had me in mind for Smash. It really does take time for projects to develop. I spent five or six years just plugging away, auditioning for so many things. Doing things like Shark Night 3D because I so badly wanted to work! The hardest part of the job is getting the job. That’s the job.”

On her job: “Being on set seems so glamorous. Sometimes it is, but at the end of the day, it’s a job. The way I keep my head wrapped around it all is to love the people I work with and know that I’m there to sing a song and say some lines. I’m just doing my job, and the rest of it is glitz.”

Debra recently opened up to Ladies’ Home Journal about her divorce to Daniel Zelman.

“I think the institution of marriage is a noble thing. I think the idea of a partner for life is incredibly romantic. But now we’re living to 100. A hundred years ago, people were dying at age 37. Til death do us part was a much different deal,” Debra said.

“It’s a very long time,” she added. “And I am at peace with the journey we’ve had. I feel like the 20 years we had together has been a huge success. And despite the fact that everything is changing, I think everyone is thriving.”

That same day, Smash star Megan Hilty, in an alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet dress, attended the opening night performance of the new Broadway musical Leap of Faith at the St. James Theatre in NYC.

Kristin and Megan have both played the role of Glinda in Broadway’s Wicked. In fact, Megan got her big break as one of Kristin‘s understudies before taking over the role a few years later!
