'Aladdin' Live-Action Sequel: Everything to Know Amid Spin-Off News for Billy Magnussen's Prince Anders

It was just announced that Billy Magnussen‘s Aladdin character Prince Anders has a spin-off movie in the works, but did you know that Disney is also planning a sequel to the live-action film?

Fans have been upset about Billy, the one white actor in a cast of diverse stars, getting his own movie as Aladdin star Mena Massoud recently said that he hasn’t landed any auditions since the movie came out.

Well, it sounds like Disney still loves Mena as he’s hinted that the sequel is a definite possibility. Reports have claimed that the sequel will follow animated sequel Return of Jafar, though that’s not yet confirmed.

“I don’t think it will be Return of Jafar, but I think there’s a possibility of a sequel, yes,” Mena told ET a couple months ago. “I think they should do one just about the animals. Like, Abu, Raja, Iago and the carpet all get together. Throwing it out there!”

Back in August, producer Dan Lin opened up about plans for a sequel.

“We’d love to,” he told SYFY Wire. “People clearly loved the movie and watched it multiple times and we get lots of fan letters and people asking us to make Return [of] Jafar, and I can just tell you that we’re in early stages right now, but we’re certainly talking about another movie. Like with Aladdin, it will not be a straight remake of any movie that’s been made before, so we’re looking at ‘where’s the best way to go with these characters.’”

Dan added, “we’d love to have [director] Guy [Ritchie] back and get the team back together. If we do another Aladdin movie, we’d certainly love to have him at the helm.”

In another interview a month later, Dan basically confirmed that Return of Jafar won’t be the basis for the sequel.

“We’re exploring lots of different ways that we can go but certainly, fans are saying, ‘we want to see more of these characters,’ but they want to see the next adventure,” he told Yahoo UK. “We’re talking now about where that could go but I don’t think it’s going to be a straight remake of The Return of Jafar.”

Will Smith Reacts to Co-Star Mena Massoud Not Getting a Single Audition Since 'Aladdin'

Will Smith is reacting to what his Aladdin co-star Mena Massoud recently revealed: he hasn’t received a single audition since the live action film’s release in May of 2019.

“I’m just hearing that right now,” Will said when an interviewer with Variety asked for his reaction to Mena‘s statement. “I haven’t spoken to Mena.”

“He is a spectacular actor, and he has nothing to worry about,” Will added before the interview ended.

Will played the Genie to Mena‘s Aladdin in the Disney film earlier this year.

Mena Massoud Says He Hasn't Gotten An Audition Since Starring in 'Aladdin'

Despite starring in Aladdin, Mena Massoud actually hasn’t gotten an audition for a new role since the movie’s success.

Speaking with The Daily Beast, the 28-year-old actor opened up about how he’s still facing struggles despite Aladdin crossing the $1 billion mark.

“I’m kind of tired of staying quiet about it. I want people to know that it’s not always dandelions and roses when you’re doing something like Aladdin,” Mena shared. “‘He must have made millions. He must be getting all these offers.’ It’s none of those things. I haven’t had a single audition since Aladdin came out.”

He continues, “I feel like I’m going to be overlooked and underestimated for a long time because I am a young actor. I’m an up and comer in the sense that I’ve been doing this for 10 years, but to a lot of people, Aladdin’s the first thing they’ve seen me in. So I think I’m going to be viewed that way for a long time. I’m going to have to work at chipping away at that.”

Mena is starring in Hulu’s Reprisal series, but it’s a role he booked before Aladdin.

“It’s wild to a lot of people,” he adds. “People have these ideas in their head. It’s like, I’m sitting here being like, ‘OK, Aladdin just hit $1 billion. Can I at least get an audition?’ I’m not expecting you to be, like, ‘Here’s Batman.’ But can I just get in the room? Can you just give me a chance? So, it’s not always what you think.”
