Emma Thompson & Michael Caine Speak Out Against 'Social Media Actors'

Emma Thompson and Michael Caine attended a royal reception for British Academy Award winners last week in London, England, and made their thoughts known about actors getting cast due to large social media followings.

“We’re casting actors who have big [social media] followings so the studios can use their followings to sell their movie. The actors are becoming attached in the sort of business way to their social media profiles, and I think that’s a disaster,” Emma said at the reception (via The Telegraph).

“These days, they just say, ‘I’m going to be an actor because I want to be rich and famous.’ And then they do a little part on television and everyone knows who they are. They can’t really act… I knew I wasn’t going to be rich, I knew I wasn’t going to be famous, I knew I wasn’t going to be a movie star, I just wanted to be a good actor, that’s all,” Michael said. “They’re very young now. I was 30 before I became well known. I’ve watched it ruin people. By the time they’re 30, they’re through.”

Michael Caine on Oscars Diversity: 'You Can't Vote for an Actor Because He's Black'

Michael Caine has weighed in on the Oscars diversity debate and he says the time “will come” for the frustrated entertainers to be recognized by the Academy.

“There’s loads of black actors. You can’t vote for an actor because he’s black,” the 82-year-old actor told BBC Radio 4 (via THR). “You got to give a good performance, and I’m sure there were very good [performances].”

It seems Michael hadn’t looked over the nominations list as he wanted to know if Idris Elba was nominated for Beasts of No Nation.

“The one I – I don’t know whether Idris got [nominated],” Michael said. “Because I saw Idris, and I thought he was wonderful. I thought he would get [nominated]. Did he not get nominated?”

“Well, look at me. I won the [European Film Award for] best actor [for Youth], and I got nominated for nothing else,” Michael added. When asked to give advice to black actors he said, “Be patient. Of course, it will come. Of course, it will come. It took me years to get an Oscar.”

Will Smith, Mark Ruffalo & More Highlighted in THR's Roundtable Issue

Will Smith, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Caine and Joel Edgerton take the cover of The Hollywood Reporter‘s Actor Roundtable issue.

Here’s what they had to share with the mag:

Will, on prejudice vs. racism: “My wife and I were just having this conversation, and we were going to the dictionary for ‘prejudice’ versus ‘racism.’ Everybody is prejudiced. Everybody has their life experiences that make them prefer one thing over another — it makes them prefer blond hair over a brunette; if you see somebody with dark skin walking down the street, you have a different reaction than you have [with] someone who is 5-foot-1 and white. But there is a connotation with racism of superiority: You feel that your race generally is superior. And I have to say, I live with constant prejudice, but racism is actually rare — someone who thinks their race is superior. I don’t want to work for them. I don’t want to work at that company. And the times I have come in contact with it, you get away from those people.”

Joel, on racism in the industry: “When you’re faced with it, too, with social media, like what happened recently with Michael B. Jordan in Fantastic Four [who played a character who is white in the comic] — people actively being racist, making those sort of comments about Star Wars [casting a black star]. Some of it is very, very alarming.”
