Microsoft and Mojang announced that the new game, made for mobile devices and due out Summer 2019, will use augmented reality to find and place objects from the game into the real world, similar to the experience of Pokémon Go.

“The game’s mechanics are simple: explore your neighborhood to find blocks and unique mobs for your builds. Once you have them, any flat surface is an opportunity to build,” said Minecraft exec Saxs Persson.

'Minecraft' Movie Finds Its Director!

The upcoming Minecraft movie has found its director!

The forthcoming Warner Bros. film, based on the massively popular video game, will be written and directed by Peter Sollett, Variety confirmed on Friday (January 11).

The story of the movie “follows a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers who, after the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.”

The film studio first acquired rights to launch the franchise in 2014. Various names were previously attached to the project, including Steve Carell in a potential role, but scheduling kept it from happening and the film was put back in development.

Peter previously directed Raising Victor Vargas, Freeheld and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.

'Minecraft' Movie Gets Greenlight After 'Lego Movie' Success!

The mega hit video game franchise Minecraft is the next game to be featured as a major motion picture, according to Deadline.

The rights to the game were bought by Warner Bros., which is coming off of their blockbuster hit The Lego Movie. The film based on the beloved building blocks has grossed over $279 million worldwide to date.

Here is how the game is described: “Minecraft is a game about breaking and placing blocks. At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things. It can also be about adventuring with friends or watching the sun rise over a blocky ocean. It’s pretty. Brave players battle terrible things in The Nether, which is more scary than pretty. You can also visit a land of mushrooms if it sounds more like your cup of tea.”

Minecraft just hit a huge milestone of over 100 million users. Amazing!
