Democrats of Congress have formally introduced articles of impeachment for President Donald Trump, following the riots that broke out last week and sent many representatives into a lockdown situation.

The Democrats state in the papers filed that they are charging Trump with “incitement of insurrection”.

The full document, that is broken down on CNN, turns to the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which states that any person who has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion against” the United States be barred from holding office.

“This impeachment charge is meant to defend the integrity of the republic,” Rhode Island Democrat David Cicilline wrote in an op-ed for the New York Times. “Both Democratic and Republican members of Congress must attend to the duties of their oath. Failing to act would set an irresponsibly dangerous precedent for future presidents who are about to leave office.”

He continued: “Further, there can be no healing of the divisions in our country without justice for the man most responsible for this horrific insurrection. The president must be held accountable.”

However, House Republicans are wary of the move, stating that impeachment could cause Trump to increase his division in the country.

Trump was impeached last year by the House for abuse of power, however, the Senate acquitted him.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi made the announcement over the weekend that the House would seek to impeach Trump unless the 25th Amendment was invoked, which would call on Vice President Mike Pence to remove Trump from office.

The Speaker of the House called out President Donald Trump on 60 Minutes on Sunday (January 10).

“Sadly, the person who is running the Executive Branch is a deranged, unhinged, dangerous president of the United States, and only a number of days until we can be protected from him. But he has done something so serious that there should be prosecution against him,” she explained.

“Nothing is off the table,” she added of the idea of invoking the 25th Amendment.

“He can only pardon himself from federal offenses, he cannot pardon himself form state offenses and that’s where he is being investigated, in the state of New York,” she added.

She also discussed why there is support for impeachment, which would restrict him from being able to run again in 2024.

:That’s one of the motivations that people have for advocating for impeachment…well I like the 25th Amendment because it gets rid of him, he’s out of the office. But there is strong support in the Congress for impeaching the president a second time.”

Trump was recently banned from social media platforms for provoking violence at the U.S. Capitol, and tried to log on from some different accounts.

Richard Barnett, a Donald Trump supporter who went viral for sitting at Nancy Pelosi‘s desk during the recent siege at the U.S. Capitol, has been arrested.

According to NBC, Barnett was arrested Friday (January 8) morning in Little Rock, Ark. and charged with entering and remaining on restricted grounds, violent entry and theft of public property.

A New York Times reporter posted a video where Barnett is seen bragging about breaking into Nancy Pelosi‘s office, holding up one of her personalized envelopes and saying he left her a “nasty note.”

The Speaker of the House has announced that she is requesting Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment, allowing for the removal of the President if he is unable to fulfill his duties.

She said the Congress “may be prepared to move forward with impeachment” against Trump if it is not invoked.

“In calling for this seditious act, the president has committed an unspeakable assault on our nation and our people,” she said referring to Trump‘s supporters storming the U.S. Capitol, calling him “a very dangerous person who should not continue in office.”

Trump was indefinitely banned from certain social media networks following the U.S. Capitol incident.

Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to her colleagues about finishing the counting of the electoral college votes, in spite of the riots that took precedence over the day.

The Speaker of the House shared the letter this afternoon (via ABC News) as members of Congress went to a safe place as rioters took over the U.S. Capitol.

Nancy called the acts of the rioters “a shameful assault was made on our democracy”, and added that it wouldn’t stop them from fulfilling their duties as representatives of the nation.

“To that end, in consultation with Leader Hoyer and Whip Clyburn and after calls to the Pentagon, the Justice Department and the Vice President, we have decided we should proceed tonight at the Capitol once it is cleared for use,” she wrote.

The letter continues, “We also knew that we would be a part of history in a positive way, today, despite ill-founded objections to the Electoral College vote. We now will be part of history, as such a shameful picture of our country was put out to the world, instigated at the highest level.”

“Members and staff should remain on the Capitol complex until they are notified by the United States Capitol Police. I look forward to seeing you later this evening, during this time of great sadness,” she concluded.

Nancy, Mike Pence, and more members of Congress were stopped in the middle of their count to ratify the election votes by the “Stop the Steal” riot, which was fueled by President Donald Trump.
