Here's How 'Orange is the New Black' is Giving Back to Honor a Beloved Character

Orange is the New Black and Netflix have launched a new charity fund in honor one of the show’s beloved characters.

Ahead of the debut of the show’s final season, Netflix has announced The Poussey Washington Fund that will offer microloans to released convicts to support them building new lives.

The fund is named after fan-favorite character Poussey Washington – portrayed by Samira Wiley – who was killed by a prison guard in season four. Her death then launched a riot within the prison.

The fund will spread out every donation equally to eight already-existing nonprofit groups.

Samira released a statement saying how honored she was to have the fund named after her character.

“It’s just a TV show, at the end of the day, but it’s changing people’s minds and hopefully with this fund it will be changing people’s lives — getting them the education that they need, getting them the health care and the mental health care that they might need,” Samira said via USA Today.

You can donate to The Poussey Washington Fund here.

The seventh and final season of Orange is the New Black will be released on Netflix on Friday, July 26.

Elisabeth Moss & Samira Wiley Discuss Significance of 'The Handmaid's Tale' Costume - Watch Here!

Elisabeth Moss and Samira Wiley are all smiles as they make their way out of the Good Morning America studios after teasing the new season of The Handmaid’s Tale on Wednesday (June 5) in New York City.

During their interview, Samira said the words “chosen family” and Elisabeth said “never giving up” to best describe season three of the popular series, which is based on renowned Canadian writer Margaret Atwood‘s 1985 classic novel.

Elisabeth and Samira also opened up about the significance of The Handmaid’s Tale costume and their reactions to seeing women around the world wearing it.

“Those are our work clothes, that’s our thing we put on when we go and do our job, but I get inspired when I see women out there wearing that costume and standing up for what they believe,” Elisabeth told GMA. “That actually inspires me. I think they’re doing the real work. I think they’re out there on the front lines and so I feel honored to put on that costume with them.”

“I feel like that is exactly who we are representing,” Samira added on those using the costumes in their protests. “To see that people are out there wearing those things and wearing the handmaid’s costume, it just gives me a heightened sense of responsibility, in terms of what we are making. It is television, but at the end of the day it can elicit real change so I’m really proud.”

Later that same day, Elisabeth was spotted in a different ensemble after taping her appearance on The View.

Samira Wiley Opens Up About Gay Characters on Television

Samira Wiley looks stunning on the cover of Nylon‘s June Pride issue, available now.

Here’s what the 32-year-old actress had to share with the mag:

On her audition for Handmaid’s Tale: “There was no part of me that expected I was going to get a call back for the role. I was worried I was not even going to remember the lines. I actually think—this is a little embarrassing, but my standards are really like this—I couldn’t remember all of the lines. And so, when I did the audition, I just held the paper, a little shaky in my hand. But, I don’t know, I guess they saw something, and they called me back.”

On gay characters on television: “There are only a couple of choices. They’re going to f**k, or they’re going to fight.”

On her advocacy: “I’m just about women and queer women opening the door. Keep opening the door.”
