Ben McKenzie leans against a patrol car while shooting Southland on Wednesday (February 15) in Los Angeles.

The 33-year-old actor filmed scenes for the TNT drama with co-star Lou Diamond Phillips, where he pushes a woman against a wall.

“Towards the end of the season, there’s a very dramatic plotline involving my character,” Ben recently told AfterElton in an on-set interview.

“[He's] trying to help out this prostitute and her daughter and getting them away from this pimp who’s abusive and terrible to them and it culminates with some pretty serious stuff,” he added.

Lucy Liu gets into character as a LAPD officer on the set of Southland on Tuesday (November 8) In Los Angeles.

The 42-year-old actress shot some scenes with Michael Cudlitz for the TNT drama, which returns January 17.

“You definitely get the grittiness, the reality of it. You just jump in headfirst. I’ve done a couple of stunts, and, you know, it’s not about padding you up. It’s about throwing you around,” Lucy recently said about playing a cop.

“I don’t think my martial-arts training is going to save me in this environment,” she added. “They can be running around using their guns.”

Ben McKenzie attends the “An Evening with Southland” panel on Tuesday (May 31) at The Paley Center in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The 32-year-old actor was joined at the event by co-stars Regina King, Michael Cudlitz, Shawn Hatosy, and the show’s executive producer Christopher Chulack.

Ben told the audience that their TNT drama is “shot so realistically, it makes it easier to play the intense emotionality in the scenes.”

The episode, titled “Cop or Not,” airs on Tuesday (February 8). Also pictured inside: Regina King and Shawn Hatosy.

Kevin Alejandro, whose character, Det. Nate Moretta, was killed off on the last episode, explained why he’s leaving the show.

“I’m a regular on True Blood so you’ll see me there. I wish I could have done both shows. If it had worked out that way, I would have been the happiest man in the world, but it works out the way it’s supposed to work out. Southland‘s been an amazing experience, and [this storyline] just fit into the way things were going,” he told E! Online.

As for what fans can expect in the next few episodes, “You get to mourn with Shawn and my family and you’ll see what the death causes within them and it effects other part of the department as well, with [Ben] and [Michael].”

“It sort of mildly effects everybody in the department,” Kevin added, “because it’s like a fraternity. All the brothers and sisters are effected on one level or another.”

Ben McKenzie suits up with his Southland co-stars Michael Cudlitz, Regina King, and Shawn Hatosy in this behind-the-scenes shot from TV Guide‘s latest issue.

“We spend an awful lot of time together,” Ben, 32, tells the magazine, adding that he’s glad “the guy who gets to act like an a–hole is actually really nice.”

The third season of the TNT drama premieres on Tuesday (January 4) at 10 p.m. and “will focus less on the characters at home and more on their time on the job,” according to TV Guide.

Ben‘s character also starts to finally gets concerned about Officer John Cooper’s (Cudlitz) addiction to painkillers.

“We’re still getting to know these people, and I think there’s going to be a lot of surprises,” said Michael.

The drama’s third season premieres Tuesday, January 4, at 10 p.m., and also stars Regina King and Shawn Hatosy.

Freddie actress Jenny Gago will also be joining the cast, TV Guide reports.

The film and TV veteran is set to play Det. Josie Ochoa, “a take-charge investigator partnered with Det. Lydia Adams (King).”

Benjamin McKenzie fans, rejoice!

Southland has been picked up by TNT for a third. The network has ordered 10 episodes for the third season, which is slated to begin airing in January 2011.

TNT picked up Southland after the series was dropped by NBC prior to the launch of its second season. TNT presented an encore of the seven-episode first season beginning in January 2010, followed by a premiere run of the six-episode second season beginning in March 2010.
