Tinashe Talks About Being Bisexual, Explains Her Views on Labels

Tinashe is opening up about her bisexuality and her views on putting labels on oneself.

The 27-year-old singer is on the cover of Gay Times‘ new issue and she opened up to the magazine.

“It’s not that I don’t like putting a label on it,” Tinashe said. “But when you say you’re bisexual, a lot of people think… they just have a lack of understanding about what it is. And I tend to shy away from terms—I guess this is the theme of my life—that make people want to categorize me or put me in a box.”

“I don’t like that sh-t. But—but—I can still give you a general sense of yeah, I’m bisexual. I’m somewhere on the spectrum. You know?” she added.

Tinashe also talked about how people often have a misconception on what it means to be bisexual.

“It’s not like all bisexual people like men and women equally—or like all bisexual people are a certain type of person. Human beings are so versatile. I don’t understand why we’re so obsessed with categorizing each other,” she said. “I never wanted people to think that I used it for attention. There are so many fucking stereotypes about being bisexual that made me want to shy away from talking about it. I’m much more open to having those discussions now.”

Back in 2011, Tinashe spoke out about her sexuality for the first time when she tweeted that she likes boys and girls.

Tinashe just released a new song with a popular female rapper!

Tinashe Speaks on Being Considered a 'Pop' Star as a Black Woman: 'I Fought Hard'

Tinashe is opening up about her experience in the music industry.

The 27-year-old Songs For You star reacted to a recent Rolling Stone article discussing the elimination of the term “urban” as a music category amid global protests against systemic racism, and the consideration of eliminating “pop” as a genre.

“This article is spot on— I’ve been saying it for YEARS. The music industry is designed to segregate and that needs to end,” she said.

“As a black woman I fought HARD AF , for years, to be considered ‘pop’ by my label without changing my sound because of the inevitable ceiling I felt was put on the urban and rhythmic departments…. then the pop department didn’t find my music acceptable so I molded it for them,” she wrote.

“& in an attempt to make my sound more pop department friendly, the public rejected it, I lost my spirit/ inspiration as a creative, &had to part ways with the label entirely. Luckily I’ve thrived as an independent artist, but I know first hand how insidious & traumatizing this is.”

Here’s what she said about her experience at recent Black Lives Matter protests…
