Michelle Obama makes a surprise appearance to help open the 2019 Grammy Awards on Sunday (February 10) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The former First Lady of the United States joined Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Jada Pinkett Smith, and host Alicia Keys for a powerful moment to kick off the night.

The women shared how music has changed their lives and how they’ve persevered despite others telling them they couldn’t succeed.

“Whether we like country or rap or rock, music helps us share ourselves: our dignity and sorrows, our hopes and joys. It allows us to hear one another, to invite each other in,” Michelle said.
