Gerard Butler Files $10 Million Lawsuit Against Movie Studio

Gerard Butler is suing the studio behind his 2013 movie Olympus Has Fallen.

The 51-year-old actor is the latest Hollywood star to take legal action against a movie studio following Scarlett Johansson‘s lawsuit against Disney.

While Scarlett‘s lawsuit stems from the studio’s change in release plans for Black Widow, which led to a decreased box office potential, Gerard‘s lawsuit seems to be over an accounting issue.

Gerard claims that he is owed at least $10 million in backend compensation for the movie, which spawned the sequels London Has Fallen and Angel Has Fallen.

The lawsuit states, “Producers have earned tens of millions of dollars from Olympus, but refuse to pay Butler a penny of the grosses and profits promised to him in the parties’ agreement. Butler refuses to tolerate Defendants’ misrepresentations and other wrongful conduct. Butler worked with Defendants to create a highly successful movie franchise. He demands his fair share.”

Variety reports that Gerard was entitled “to 10% of net profits, plus 6% of domestic adjusted gross receipts above $70 million and 12% of foreign adjusted gross receipts above $35 million. His production company was also entitled to 5% of net profits, and Butler was to receive certain bonuses for hitting box office thresholds.”

An auditor hired by Gerard found that “domestic receipts were understated by $17.5 million, and producers’ receipts were understated by $12 million, including the $8 million that went to the executives.”

The lawsuit was filed against studio Millennium Films, which was formerly known as Nu Image.

Another huge star is reportedly considering a lawsuit against a major studio.
