What is Instagram's New 'Quiet Mode' Feature & How Does It Work?

Instagram introduced a new feature called “Quiet mode” that will allow users to take steps to limit their access to the app when they need to focus on other things.

On Thursday (January 19) the social media company announced the change in a post on their blog and hinted that it was particularly aimed at teens to help when they need to study.

How does Instagram’s “Quiet mode” work? At a base level, think of it as putting your phone on Do Not Disturb.

According to Instagram, the feature is supposed to “encourage people to set boundaries with friends and followers.”

After you enable “Quiet mode,” you won’t receive notifications on the app. Anyone who messages you will receive a message alerting them that you are “In quiet mode.”

“Teens have told us that they sometimes want to take time for themselves and might be looking for more ways to focus at night, while studying, and during school,” Instagram explained. “You can easily customize your ‘Quiet mode’ hours to fit your schedule and once the feature is turned off, we’ll show you a quick summary of notifications so you can catch up on what you missed. Anyone can use ‘Quiet mode’, but we’ll prompt teens to do so when they spend a specific amount of time on Instagram late at night.”

That’s not the only new feature on Instagram. They company is also making moves to enable people to mark when they aren’t interested in seeing on the Explore page.

The feature is officially accessible in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand as of Thursday. Over time it will be accessible elsewhere, too.
