Hasan Minhaj Could Be 'Disqualified' From 'Daily Show' Host Search Because Of False Stories, Former Staffers Say

Hasan Minhaj could be out of the running for The Daily Show hosting job.

The 37-year-old actor was one of four possible people to take over the role from Trevor Noah, who vacated the desk last year.

However, it seems that his recent reveal that he’s been embellishing his stories in his stand up routines, might have cost him the job.

TheWrap spoke to several former staffers on The Daily Show, who opened up about how lying about racist encounters should cost him the opportunity.

“It’s extremely dangerous to cry wolf on racism, especially if you want to be the host of a very influential, politically-driven show,” one told the outlet.

Another then added that they didn’t “know how [his staff] can take him seriously on day one when he doubled down on his own lies and ridiculous excuses that his lies were emotional truths. It’s almost a parody.”

Prior to Trevor, Jon Stewart was the host, and according to one former staffer who worked at the show around that time, writers could be fired if stories weren’t thoroughly fact-checked – something they think should extend to the hosts.

“With [The Daily Show] came responsibility. You didn’t make sh** up, and you didn’t punch down. Both Trevor [Noah] and Jon kept that ethos alive. But Hasan did both of those things,” the former staffer told the outlet. “He [Hasan] hurt other people of color by giving white supremacists the supposed proof they need that people of color shouldn’t be trusted when they talk about discrimination.”

An additional former employee said that telling the false stories “disqualifies him from that particular role,” but not cancelled they clarified, “not from many, many other things in entertainment. Not stand-up, by the way, not that. But for me, this particular hosting job, it should disqualify him.”

The Daily Show is a staple late night, current event talk show on Comedy Central. It’s not known when it will return.
