Andrew Lincoln's 'Walking Dead' Movie Will Go to Theaters First

Andrew Lincoln left The Walking Dead television series last year, but it was promised that his character Rick Grimes would return for a new movie.

It was originally believed that the movie would air on AMC, but it was announced at 2019 Comic-Con on Friday (July 19) that the movie will get a theatrical release.

Universal Pictures will be distributing the upcoming untitled movie and a brief teaser video was released online.

Scott Gimple, the chief content officer of the Walking Dead franchise, is writing the movie. A release date has not yet been revealed.

Walking Dead's Andrew Lincoln to Continue Playing Rick Grimes in Three Movies for AMC

Andrew Lincoln‘s final episode on The Walking Dead just aired, but you don’t have to say goodbye to Rick Grimes just yet.

The 45-year-old actor will continue playing the beloved character for three feature-length movies that will air on AMC. We won’t spoil you on how Rick exited The Walking Dead, but there is obviously a way for him to continue!

“It’s not the beginning of the end, it’s the end of the beginning,” Andrew said on The Talking Dead after the episode aired. “And I like the idea that we get to tell a bigger story, maybe with a sort of wider vista. And I’ve always been interested in what’s going on out there, you know, whether or not there is contact with the wider world. I want to know the meta of it all. And I suppose to be able to kind of touch upon that in a contained story for me is a very exciting proposition … Maybe it’s the start of a bigger story.”

Production on the movies is expected to begin as early as 2019.

“The story of Rick will go on in films,” The Walking Dead chief content officer Scott M. Gimple said in a statement. “Right now, we’re working on three but there’s flexibility in that. … Over the next several years, we’re going to be doing specials, new series are quite a possibility, high-quality digital content and then some content that defies description at the moment. We’re going to dig into the past and see old characters. We’re going to introduce new characters and new situations.”

Andrew Lincoln Reveals the Reason Why He's Leaving 'The Walking Dead'

Andrew Lincoln has revealed the reason he decided to leave The Walking Dead after the upcoming ninth season.

“I have two young children, and I live in a different country, and they become less portable as they get older,” Andrew told EW. “It was that simple. It was time for me to come home.”

If you don’t know, Andrew is from England and has two kids, Arthur and Matilda, with his wife Gael Anderson. The Walking Dead films in Georgia for extended periods of time.

About filming his final episodes, which have already wrapped, he said, “Completing the show was like releasing air finally. And it was very satisfying the last two episodes in particular. But doing a panel and having to talk to [thousands of] people in Hall H and then have all my friends hug me at the end? The s— got real, is the truth of the matter.”

Austin Nichols Praises Andrew Lincoln in Open Letter: 'My Hero'

Andrew Lincoln is officially leaving The Walking Dead after the upcoming ninth season and his former co-star Austin Nichols is praising his work ethic in an open letter.

Austin played the character Spencer Monroe in seasons five, six, and season of the hit AMC series.

In his open letter, Austin reflected on the leader that Andrew was on set.

“I have been on different TV shows and movies over the years, but I have never seen a leader like Andy. I have seen appalling behavior from actors. Screaming. Mind games. Pulling rank. From Andy, I saw selflessness,” he wrote. “I saw grace. I saw kindness. I saw a man lift his fellow actors up when they were struggling. I saw a man give other actors the spotlight when he could easily have kept it for himself.”
