'Andy Griffith' Star Betty Lynn, Who Played Thelma Lou, Passes Away at 95

Betty Lynn has sadly died at the age of 95.

The actress, who play Thelma Lou on The Andy Griffith Show, passed away “peacefully” after a brief illness, according to a statement, via People.

Betty was known for playing the girlfriend of Barney Fife on the show, but was also noted for her work in 1950′s Cheaper by the Dozen, as well as 1948′s Sitting Pretty, June Bride and Payment on Demand.

In a recent report, THR says that Betty received $500 for each of the 26 episodes she appeared in on The Andy Griffith Show between 1961 and 1966.

Betty reprised her role for the 1986 NBC TV film Return to Mayberry, in which Thelma and Barney finally tie the knot.

A private burial service is planned in Culver City, CA. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

The Andy Griffith Museum also shared that in lieu of flowers for Betty‘s funeral, donations in her memory can be made to the Betty Lynn Scholarship Endowment (for students pursuing a career in dance or acting) or the Barbara and Emmett Forrest Endowment Fund (for the Andy Griffith Museum and Mayberry Days).
