Chris Martin Opens Up About Wondering if He Was Gay & Getting Past Homophobia (Video)

Chris Martin is opening up in a Rolling Stone interview presented by Dodge with Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner.

Here’s what the Coldplay frontman had to say…

On taking the name Coldplay from a friend: “My good friend Tim who was in a band and would go through band names very very fast and he would discard them and Coldplay we picked up from him.”

On his boarding school experience, wondering if he might be gay, and getting past homophobia: “When I went to boarding school I walked a bit funny and I bounced a bit and I was also very homophobic because I was like, ‘If I’m gay, I’m completely f–ked for eternity’ and I was a kid discovering sexuality. ‘Maybe I’m gay, maybe I’m this, maybe I’m that, I can’t be this’ so I was terrified and then I walked a bit funny and I was in a boarding school with a bunch of quite hardcore kids who were also gone for their thing and, for a few years, they would very much say, ‘You’re definitely gay,’ in quite a full-on manner, quite aggressively telling me that and it was weird for me for a few years…I don’t know and even if I am, I can’t be because it’s wrong… If I am, I can’t be so that was creating a terrible turmoil…I start to worry about it for sure. About 15 and a half, I don’t know what happened, I was like, ‘Yeah so what?’ and then it all just stopped overnight. It was very interesting. Once I was like, ‘Yeah, so what if I’m gay.’”

On whether worry or the kids eventually stopped: “The worry and anyone teasing you and…I don’t know what it was. I really don’t remember. Just growing up a bit and having a bit more exposure to the world thinking, ‘A lot of my heroes are gay’ or whatever. Whatever they are, it doesn’t really matter. So what that did was ease a big pressure and then made me question, ‘Hey maybe some of this stuff that I’m learning about God and everything — I’m not sure if I subscribe to all of this particular religion’… So for a few years, that was a bit wobbly and then eventually I just was like, ‘Okay, I think I have my own relationship with what I think God is and it’s not really any one religion for me.’”

Chris Martin On Performing In Jordan with Coldplay: 'We Stand For Love & Peace & Brotherhood'

Chris Martin hits the stage to perform alongside his Coldplay bandmates at the Natural History Museum on Monday (November 25) in London, England.

Over the weekend, the 42-year-old musician and his Coldplay mates – Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion — delivered a landmark performance at a Roman citadel in Amman, Jordan.

“I think we’ve come here because it’s in the very middle of the biggest zone that bands like us seem to feel they can’t go to — and because it’s in the middle of this region which we are told to be a bit scared of at the moment. So we kind of thought, ‘Let’s go there, right to the middle, then.’ To break some of that thinking,” Chris told NME. “In our experience, most people, seem to only think about or hear about the very extremes of society — and obviously that’s especially true of this area.”

“But when you come here, what you find is that most people just want to live their lives like anyone else,” Chris Martin expanded. “It’s all about trying to get different people across the world to be friends with each other, and this is sort of our vague attempt. We stand for love and for peace and for brotherhood.”

Coldplay: 'Everyday Life' Album Stream & Download - Listen!

Coldplay‘s new album Everyday Life has arrived!

The new double album is separated into two halves – Sunrise and Sunset, each with eight songs. The album’s cover image is based around a 1919 photo of guitarist Jonny Buckland’s great-grandfather’s band.

Don’t expect to see Chris Martin and the rest of the band on tour to promote the album as they have announced they will not tour again until it’s environmentally friendly to do so.

You can download the album now on iTunes or stream it below thanks to Spotify.

Coldplay Won't Be Touring Again Until It's Environmentally Friendly

Coldplay‘s Chris Martin gave an interview and while their album, Everyday Life, is hitting the Internet in just a few hours, they won’t be touring soon.

“Our next tour will be the best possible version of a tour like that environmentally,” Chris said, relaying that their tour would not move forward unless it is environmentally friendly. “We would be disappointed if it’s not carbon neutral. We’ve done a lot of big tours at this point. How do we turn it around so it’s not so much taking as giving?”

“We’re taking time, over the next year or two, to work out how can not only our tour be sustainable, but how can it be actively beneficial? How can we harness the resources that our tour creates and make it have a positive impact?” he continued.

He continued, “Our dream is to have a show with no single-use plastic, to have it be largely solar powered.”

“[The album] is our reaction to the perceived negativity that’s everywhere. And there is a lot of trouble, but there’s also so much positivity and so much great life happening. So in a way, it’s just trying to make sense of things, saying what we feel and what we see,” Chris Martin recently said of the upcoming album.

Chris stopped by Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show Future Sounds to premiere the new songs where he also chatted about the new album.

“It’s all about just being human. Every day is great and every day is terrible…It just feels kind of free. There’s so much life bursting out on the planet,” Chris shared. “[The album] is our reaction to the perceived negativity that’s everywhere. And there is a lot of trouble, but there’s also so much positivity and so much great life happening. So in a way, it’s just trying to make sense of things, saying what we feel and what we see.”
