Jonathan Van Ness Talks with Jimmy Kimmel About Being HIV Undetectable & Ending Stigma!

Jonathan Van Ness wants to end the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS and other STIs!

The 32-year-old Queer Eye star explained why he went public about his HIV-positive status in his memoir “Over the Top” during Monday’s (September 30) episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live.

“The real reason I wanted to talk about it in the book is because when I was 25 and got this, I was not someone who had this platform. I did not have access financially that I have now, and the amount of hoops I had to jump through … it is just not appropriate,” Jonathan said of finding a doctor and medication.

“We have to end the stigma around STIs and around living with HIV,” Jonathan added. “We have come such a long way in the medical community, and it’s interesting because there’s just no reason with what we know and the medical advances that we’ve had in the last 20 years for anyone to be contracting HIV now.”

Jonathan Van Ness revealed he met with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi last week to discuss the Equality Act, a bill that would extend civil rights protections to LGBT people.

“What I think is also crazy is the lack of attention to living with HIV/AIDS in America right now,” Van Ness added. “I’ve been telling a lot of people to speak truth to power and I think I have to take my turn to speak truth to power.”

Queer Eye's Jonathan Van Ness Remembers the Day He Was Diagnosed with HIV

Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness is speaking further about being diagnosed with HIV when he was 25 years old.

“I was trying to push through. I had not been feeling amazing. I was doing a very good client’s hair … She was one of the three or four faithful loyal clients I had in St. Louis — it was kind of a rough go. And I was like, ‘Let me just pull this partial highlight together and be about my day,’” Jonathan recalled during an appearance on the Today show.

“The next thing I knew I was on my back on the ground and I was like, ‘Where am I? This doesn’t feel good,’ ” Jonathan added. “So I went home and went to bed and then the next day I went to Planned Parenthood and that was where I found out that I had HIV.”

“It was the moment that you dread hearing,” he continued. “It’s the thing that I had feared, which I also talk about in the book, it was something that I had been very fearful of as a small child. I was born in 1987, so growing up in the midst of the HIV-AIDS crisis and having two parents who were at the age of seeing people just — we lost an entire generation of people.”

Today, Jonathan is feeling great.

“So there’s a thing called a viral load and that’s how much copies of the virus is in you,” he explained about the virus. “And you take a pill every day and it basically kills all the copies of the virus in your blood and that means you can achieve and maintain an undetectable viral load. There’s been a lot of studies … that basically, undetectable equals un-transmittable. So as long as you’re adhering to your medication and seeing your doctor every three months — I mean, I’ve picked up figure skating, I’ve done nothing but get cuter and be able to work longer and harder hours. I feel like I’m thriving!”

Jonathan‘s book “Over The Top” is out now.

Queer Eye's Jonathan Van Ness Reveals He's HIV Positive

Jonathan Van Ness, one of the beloved stars of Netflix’s Queer Eye reboot, is coming out as HIV positive.

The 32-year-old reality star chatted with The New York Times ahead of the release of his memoir “Over The Top,” which will hit stores on September 24.

“I’ve had nightmares every night for the past three months because I’m scared to be this vulnerable with people,” Jonathan told the outlet. “There are issues that need to be talked about.”

Jonathan said that he found out he was HIV positive at the age of 25 after he fainted while working with a client.

“That day was just as devastating as you would think it would be,” he wrote in his book.

“When Queer Eye came out, it was really difficult because I was like, ‘Do I want to talk about my status?’” he told the Times. “And then I was like, ‘The Trump administration has done everything they can do to have the stigmatization of the LGBT community thrive around me.’ I do feel the need to talk about this.”

“These are all difficult subjects to talk about on a makeover show about hair and makeup,” he added. “That doesn’t mean Queer Eye is less valid, but I want people to realize you’re never too broken to be fixed.”
