Chris Evans Explains Why He Almost Turned Down Captain America Role

Chris Evans is definitely most known for his work as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and he says almost turned down the role.

The 38-year-old actor had worked with Marvel in the past when he played Johnny Storm/Human Torch in two Fantastic Four movies in 2005 and 2007.

Chris was asked to do a screen test for Steve Rogers in the first Captain America movie and he turned down the opportunity several times because he wasn’t sure he was ready to be pushed into the spotlight with a high-profile like that one.

“My suffering would be my own,” Chris told THR.

Marvel kept pursuing him for the role and eventually offered him the job without even doing a screen test. Chris shared the same agent as Robert Downey Jr. and they had a conversation that led him to signing on for the project.

“It was the best decision I’ve ever made, and I really owe that to [Marvel boss] Kevin Feige for being persistent and helping me avoid making a giant mistake,” Chris said. “To be honest, all the things that I was fearing never really came to fruition.”
