Rick Malambri: 'Feel Like You're On Stage with Us' in Step Up 3D!

Rick Malambri opens up to Interview magazine in the publication’s newest issue!

Here’s what the Step Up 3D star had to share:

On what it’s like to shoot a dance movie in 3D: “[Director] Jon [Chu's] vision of this movie was ‘What’s the best way to watch dance? You want to feel like you’re there. You want to feel like a part of it.’ Instead of throwing all the gimmicks in your face, their main reason for doing this movie was to give you a different feel for watching dance. You feel like you’re on stage with us. I feel like we’ve captured that essence of being there live.”

On his pre-shoot preparations: “I definitely learned a lot. I had never done choreography before. But working with all these dancers, which was a month and half of ten hour days. Pre-production was all dancing. It was six days a week, ten hours a day of choreography. We had personal training and Capoeira and Parkour. All this training for hours upon hours. For me, coming into this not knowing a single bit of choreography–I’ve never taken a choreography class in my life–they put me through the ringer.”

On what it was like to work with a large ensemble of dancers: “I’m sure there were times where we just wanted to strangle each other. But the cool thing about the pre-production was we had a month and a half to get to know each other. We spent so much time together, ten hour days almost every day of the week. We really got to make connections with everyone….When we were shooting the movie, it felt like we weren’t there to work.”

Rick Malambri is DA MAN

Rick Malambri is gearing up for the release of his latest film, Step Up 3D!

Here’s what the actor and Da Man cover model had to share:

On his character in the film: “In Step Up 3D, I play a character named Luke Katcher, who is an aspiring film director inspired by dance. The film follows Luke, and a group of dancers—which he lives with—on a journey to win a huge underground dance battle that could possibly save them from some troubles they have found themselves in. It’s a high-energy film packed full of dance, with a nice heartfelt story involved.”

On his favorite hobbies: “I am a huge surfer. I have been surfing since I was a kid growing up in Florida. Apart from that, I am also a really big nerd. I’ve been a computer geek since the age of seven, when I got my first computer. It was a 386DXII. It was then that I fell in love for the first time. I spent so many hours on that thing. At the age of 11 I built my first computer and started to learn how to do my art on the computer, along with other things, like writing code and designing. It is still something that I truly enjoy.”

On the tattoos that he has: “The tattoo on my left forearm is an astrological sign for Scorpio; an ‘M’ shape with a scorpion tail on the end, which represents my astrological sign as well as my last name. There is also a Japanese-style wave surrounding it, representing Scorpio as a water sign because I grew up in the water surfing. And it is something that truly represents me. The tattoo on my right arm is the Korean letters that spell love.”

Step Up 3-D - Trailer!

Check out the new trailer for the much-anticipated dance flick, Step Up 3-D, starring rising actor Rick Malambri and Aussie newcomer Sharni Vinson.

When asked about the Step Up franchise, producer Adam Shankman told JustJared.com, “The formula for these movies is very simple, get great looking people who can dance their butts off, get great music to set to their story and hopefully people can have a love story. We were referred to once as the dancing version of Saw. We can just keep making it over and over again because people like it, you know what I mean? And it was totally [director] John Chu‘s vision to make it 3-D, and that makes this one special to me. It’s just amazing being around all these talented people, it’s totally inspiring and it keeps me young.”

Rick Malambri: Expect The Unexpected

Rick Malambri heats up the pages of August Man‘s December 2009 issue in a Dolce & Gabbana vintage jacket and dress shirt by Gucci.

The 27-year-old model and actor (he recently appeared in Bruce WillisSurrogates and has a major role in Step Up 3-D) spoke to August Man about performing, who he’d love to work with and what to expect from him in the future.

On his lifelong passion for the arts: “I have always wanted to act, or at least be a performer, ever since I was a little kid. At the age of five I would steal my father’s Bryan Adams CD and stand up on the counter top and sing “Summer of ’69″ at the top of my lungs.”

On the person he’d most like to work with: “I would love to act with Johnny Depp. I just want to get a chance to pay attention to his work ethics. His characters are so fascinating and I have always looked up to him and his style of acting.”

On what to expect in the future: “All I can say is be prepared to expect the unexpected. I want to keep people on their toes, keep them entertained. It’s too early to say, but just know it’s going to be a wild ride.”
