'Riverdale' Star KJ Apa Opens Up About Car Crash: 'I Should Have Pulled Over & Gone to Sleep'

KJ Apa opens up about his September car crash in a new interview and photo shoot for Esquire, out now.

Here’s what the 20-year-old Riverdale actor had to say:

On staying in shape: “I have to maintain a pretty tight physique, being shirtless pretty much every episode. I try to get to the gym every day. It takes a lot of stress out of stuff. It’s a long season. We’re doing 22 episodes in Season Two, and we’re about halfway through now. It’s crazy to think that right now last year we were finished. To think that we have 11 more episodes is a lot and overwhelming.”

On the high expectations Riverdale fans have for the second season, and the rabid “Shipping Wars” in particular: “I don’t really follow that stuff. I know the girls are really into that stuff, and I do hear about it at work. I find it cool that the fans get really involved in it and they stand by their shipping teams—if that’s how you say it, I don’t know. They’re ravenous, man. They will fight to end for these characters.”

On the car crash in late September: “That was just a one-off accident, and it was a mistake on my part. I should have pulled over and gone to sleep instead of battling my way home. But I learned from it. It was a blessing in disguise. I came out unscathed, and I thank God that I’m okay—it could have been a lot worse. The schedule didn’t change. It’s still a requirement for the actors to drive to work, which is fair enough. The crew works longer than we do, and they have to drive back and forth to work every day. It puts things in perspective for actors on other shows; when you’re driving home, you’ve got to be mindful and make sure your mind’s right and that you’re not tired. I was really lucky the production was there for me and helped me the whole way, which made me feel looked after.”

KJ Apa's Car Accident: WBTV Clarifies Details & Hours Worked

KJ Apa was involved in a car accident last week after falling asleep behind the wheel following a long day of work on Riverdale and now WBTV is clarifying details surrounding the situation.

It was initially reported that the 20-year-old actor worked a 16-hour day before getting into the car for a 45 minute drive to his hotel. The accident spurred calls from cast and crew to change conditions on set and allow for them to receive car services when working late hours.

WBTV says that there is already a policy in place for cast and crew to be provided with “a taxi, a driver or a hotel room upon request.” They also noted that KJ worked 14.2 hours following a 2.5 hour workday the day before.

“The safety of the cast and crew on all of our productions is of paramount importance to the Studio. Productions adhere to the Screen Actors Guild–mandated turnaround time of 12 hours from wrap time to next day call time for cast members,” WBTV said in the statement. “In accordance with industry standard policy, if any cast or crew member feels tired or unsafe at any time after working, the Studio will provide a taxi, a driver or a hotel room upon request. This is communicated to all cast and crew, both in writing and verbally, at the beginning of production and is reiterated continuously throughout the duration of production.”

Riverdale's KJ Apa in Car Accident, Fell Asleep at Wheel After 16-Hour Workday on Set

KJ Apa, who plays the leading role of Archie on The CW’s Riverdale, was in a car accident after working a very long work day last week in Vancouver, Canada.

Apparently, the 20-year-old actor was on set for 16 hours, and then had to drive 45 minutes to where he was staying for the evening, THR reports. KJ reportedly fell asleep at the wheel during the drive, and was taken to the hospital and thankfully discharged without any major injuries.

Cole Sprouse, KJ‘s co-star, was also reportedly supposed to be with him in the car but his plans changed at the last minute.

KJ‘s car sustained damage and is now unusable.

The publication is reporting that because of this serious incident, cast and crew are demanding better safety and protection. Cole has apparently asked the show’s producers to provide transportation to and from set during late hours, which actually goes against WBTV’s policy.

We’re so glad KJ is okay after this scary incident.

'Riverdale' Spinoff With Sabrina The Teenage Witch in Works at The CW

The CW’s Riverdale has sparked a potential Sabrina The Teenage Witch spinoff, according to THR.

The new show will be titled “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” and would re-imagine the story of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age tale that traffics in horror, the occult and witchcraft.

SABRINA SPELLMAN DREAM CAST LIST

The series, which The CW is developing with Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, is described as in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist.

It finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while fighting the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.

Cole Sprouse Addresses Lili Reinhart Dating Rumors Without Confirming or Denying Them

Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart have had fans buzzing about their relationship all summer long and now he is addressing the rumors that they’re dating, though he didn’t confirm or deny them at all.

The 25-year-old actor was asked bout fan speculation that he and his Riverdale co-star are dating in real life and he brought up the fact that fans want all of the stars to date each other.

“Since the show began, people have wanted Lili and I to be together,” Cole said in Entertainment Weekly‘s Fall TV Preview issue. “People have wanted Lili and [Camila Mendes] to be together. People have wanted KJ [Apa] and I to be together. People have wanted every actor on this show to be in a union that they could make real and talk about. So I think that kind of discussion, especially because it’s based so much on rumor and hearsay, needs to be taken with a grain of salt. We’re all still human lives that are interacting with the source material. But, truthfully, it’s very pleasing that people talk about Lili and I in that way because it means that we’re resonating so strongly from our character perspective that people really want that to be true.”

“I think as professional actors we can pat ourselves on the back for that and go, ‘This was a success,’” Cole added. “It was such a success that people want to see it in real life.”

Lili was also asked to talk about the relationship and she said no comment.
