Oscars Best Picture Mistake in 2017 - What Went Wrong, What Happened Next?
One of the most memorable moments in Academy Awards history happened at last year’s show when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced the wrong winner for the biggest award of the night, Best Picture.
So, how did that moment actually happen and what happened next to everyone involved? Let’s take a look back at that moment in time!
Beatty and Dunaway announce the wrong winner
- The former Bonnie and Clyde co-stars presented Best Picture together. When Warren opened up the envelope, he looked a little confused and ultimately let Faye announce the winner. She said La La Land and the team from that film came up on stage to accept the award.
Moonlight really won!
- La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz came forward after some commotion to tell everyone, “There’s a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won Best Picture. This is not a joke… This is not a joke. Moonlight has won Best Picture.” He then showed the real card from the actual envelope to the crowd. WATCH THE VIDEO HERE!
Beatty explains what happened
- Warren came on stage after the wrong winner was announced to explain what happened. “I want to tell you what happened,” Warren said. “I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone, La La Land. That’s why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn’t trying to be funny. Thank you very much. This is Moonlight, the best picture.” WATCH THE VIDEO HERE!

The envelopes were mixed up
- The envelope that the presenters was given was the incorrect one. It was a duplicate of the Best Actress one instead of the actual Best Picture envelope. The PwC accountant, Brian Cullinan, mistakenly handed the back-up envelope to the presenters and admitted blame for the moment in a statement.
Beatty and Dunaway speak out
- After the incident, both of the stars spoke out and wanted the Academy to clarify what happened. Read a statement from Warren and a statement from Faye.
Oscars cut ties with PwC accountants
- The Academy announced days after the Oscars that PwC accountants Brian Cullinan and Martha Ruiz would not be welcomed back in the future. Despite cutting ties with the specific accountants who represented PwC in the past, the Academy has retained the accounting firm and new accountants will safeguard the results this year.
Beatty and Dunaway will get a second chance!
- Warren and Faye are set to present at the Oscars again this year! There have been rumors that they will present Best Picture again at the end of the show and another report said they’ll give Moonlight another chance to accept the award at the top of the show. We’ll have to see what happens!
