Jay explained that the accident, which happened on November 12, happened as he and longtime friend, Dave Killackey, we working on a clogged fuel line in the undercarriage of a 1907 White Steam Car parked in his garage.

“With a steam car, you have gasoline, but you also have a vaporizer which is heated by a pilot light to turn water into steam,” he adds, saying that he was attempting to unclog it.

He then recalled getting “a face full of gasoline. I knew how close I was to the pilot light and I thought ‘Uh oh.’”

Jay says that once the spark reacted with the gas, his face was on fire.

“It felt exactly like my face was on fire,” he shared. “Maybe like the most intense sunburn you’ve ever had, that’d be fair to say. I’m not a panicky guy, but I knew if I breathed in I could scorch my lungs. I was under the car maybe 10 seconds before Dave pulled me out. Any longer than that I could have lost my eye.”

Following the events of the accident, Jay says that paramedics arrived within minutes of it, and the next day, he was at The Grossman Center, which treated for burns across his face, neck, chest, hands and left arm.

Over a nine day timeframe, Jay underwent two grafting surgeries with human cadaver skin and another with pig intestine to help regenerate new healthy skin, in addition to hyperbaric chamber sessions to help oxygenate tissue.

Jay also opened up about the procedures in an essay for WSJ over the weekend. Read it here…
