Jurnee Smollett-Bell strikes a pose while attending a special screening of her new show Underground held at the Schomburg Center on Tuesday (March 8) in New York City.
The 29-year-old actress was joined at the event by her co-star Alano Miller, and creators and executive producers Joe Pokaski and Misha Green.
“We’ve never seen the story of the Underground Railroad told. Which is crazy. It’s one sentence in history books, and people sum it up as one person: Harriet Tubman,” Jurnee expressed (via Cosmopolitan). “When in actuality there were thousands of men and women who, because they attempted to escape, tore down the system of slavery. And that story hasn’t been told. This was the first integrated civil rights movement in our nation. It’s not just a slave narrative. So I would tell them you have not seen this story before – you just haven’t. And you haven’t seen it told in the way that we tell it. It’s so exciting to be a part of something that gives a voice to the voiceless like this. It puts a face to the thousands of people that had the courage to run. Misha and Joe, our showrunners, always say, “These were our superheroes.” And it’s true! They were our Justice League. This is the greatest escape story that’s never been told.”
