'Meg 2' Opening Weekend - Box Office Numbers Revealed!

Meg 2: The Trench is out now, and the numbers are in!

The highly anticipated sequel to the Jason Statham-led 2018 shark thriller brought in $112 million internationally and $30 million domestically, bringing its global total so far to $142 million, via Variety.

The movie had a budget of $130 million, and was co-financed by Warner Bros. and China Media Capital.

'The Meg' Makes a Historic Splash at the Box Office!

The Meg is taking a big bite out of the box office!

The shark movie has already raked up $44.5 million at the box office in its opening weekend, marking the biggest opening of all time for a live-action shark picture, not adjusted for inflation according to THR.

It’s also Warner Bros. Studio’s biggest opening the year to date, surpassing Ready Player One ($41.8 million) and Ocean’s 8 ($41.6 million).

Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao and Cliff Curtis co-star in the film.

Steven Spielberg‘s classic Jaws remains the top-grossing live-action shark film in the United States, while The Shallows grossed $119 million in 2016. 2017′s 47 Meters Down earned $44.3 million.

'The Meg' Is Exceeding Box Office Expectations!

The Meg is on track for a possible $40 million debut at the weekend box office, which exceeds expectations from experts.

The shark movie, starring Jason Statham, earned an estimated $16.5 million on Friday, including the $4 million it grossed during Thursday night previews.

The film reportedly cost around $150 million to make, so it still has a long ways to go to make back its investment.

Also opening in theaters this weekend are Slender Man, which will gross around $10-11 million, and BlacKkKlansman, which will gross around $9-10 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The flick stars Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Ruby Rose and Jessica McNamee, as well as Page Kennedy, Olafur Darri Olafsson, Masi Oka, Rainn Wilson and Cliff Curtis.

The Meg is based on Steve Alten’s 1997 novel and follows an expert deep sea rescue diver who is recruited to save the crew of a deep-sea submersible from a 75-foot-long prehistoric mega-shark known as the Megalodon.
