The 27-year-old Indian actress stars as the title character in the movie, which is based on Thomas Hardy‘s classic novel “Tess of the D’Ubervilles.”

Here’s the official synopsis: Trishna lives with her family in a village in Rajasthan, India’s largest state. As the eldest daughter, she works in a nearby resort to help pay the bills. Jay (Riz Ahmed) is the wealthy son of a property developer. When he takes up managing a resort at his father’s request, he meets Trishna at a dance and their fates cross. Jay finds every opportunity to win Trishna’s affection and she accepts his efforts with shy curiosity. But when the two move to Mumbai and become a couple, Jay’s deep family bond threaten the young lovers’ bliss.

Trishna is slated to be released July 13.

Freida Pinto poses at the photo call for her new film, Desert Dancer, held at the Palais des Festivals during the 2012 Cannes Film Festival on Friday (May 18) in Cannes, France.

The 27-year-old actress was joined by her co-star Reece Ritchie and the film’s director Afshin Ghaffarin.

Freida is an ambassador for L’Oreal Paris, which is the official makeup partner of the festival.

Freida Pinto strikes a pose with Jane Fonda at the Rust & Bone (De Rouille et D’os) premiere during the 2012 Cannes Film Festival on Thursday (May 17) at Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France.

The two actresses joined fellow L’Oreal Ambassador Eva Longoria at the red carpet event.

The night before, all three actresses got glam for the festival’s opening ceremony and Moonrise Kingdom premiere. Freida and Eva later changed dresses for a star-studded dinner.

FYI: Eva paired an Emilio Pucci dress with Brian Atwood heels and Damiani earrings. Freida wore an Atelier Versace gown.

Both actresses changed out of the gowns they wore earlier in the evening at the opening ceremony.

The Artist‘s Berenice Bejo, accompanied by her director husband Michel Hazanavicius, looked ravishing in a red Louis Vuitton gown with Chopard jewels. She’s serving as the host for the festival’s opening and closing ceremonies.

Freida Pinto and Maggie Grace sandwich in Roger Vivier Creative Director Bruno Frisoni at the fashion brand’s private party on Wednesday (May 2) in Los Angeles.

The bash, hosted at the home of brand consultant/ambassador Anne Crawford, was held the night before the opening of Roger Vivier‘s Costa Mesa, Calif., boutique – the first on the west coast.

Last week, Freida was in NYC where she premiered her new film, Trishna, at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival.

FYI: Freida wore the “Crystal Palace” pump with the “Night Tube” clutch, while Maggie wore the “Cecil” sandal with the “Prisme” clutch all by Roger Vivier.
