Oscars: Only 6 Black Women Have Been Nominated for Best Actress Since Halle Berry's Historic Win 20 Years Ago

It has been 20 years since Halle Berry became the first black woman to win the Best Actress award at the Oscars and every winner since then has been a white woman.

Black women have not been given many chances to win in those two decades as only six black women have even been nominated in that time frame for a collective seven Best Actress nominations.

There have been 100 nomination slots for Best Actress in the last 20 years, which means black women only received 7% of those spots. Hopefully we’ll see more diversity in the category in the years to come.

In the last 20 years, two black men have won the Best Actor prize and it’s likely that Will Smith will pick up the award this year.

Halle just reflected on her win for Monster’s Ball and said she will “never get over this moment.”

Click through the slideshow to see the seven times that black women were nominated in the last 20 years…

Salma Hayek Will Not Say Donald Trump's Name

Salma Hayek strikes a pose on the red carpet at a screening of her new movie Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet at Bing Theatre at LACMA on Wednesday (July 29) in Los Angeles.

The 48-year-old actress was joined by her daughter Valentina, 7, as well as Colin Farrell, Eva Longoria, Dustin Hoffman, Quvenzhané Wallis, and Alfred Molina.

Salma was recently asked about Donald Trump‘s comments about Mexican immigrants.

“I’m aware that he would say anything to attract attention and create the publicity around him,” Salma told E! News. “If something generates publicity, I would never be surprised about anything he does.”

She also said, “Things that he said…I don’t repeat and I don’t say his name because I don’t want to give him extra publicity.”
