Scooter Braun Thought Justin Bieber 'Could Die' Back in 2013

Scooter Braun continues to open up about his client Justin Bieber‘s tough couple of years in this new interview.

“The outsiders don’t really know what was happening. It was far worse than people realize,” Scooter told the NYT. “And when he is ready, he will tell what he was going through. But it’s a hard thing to watch someone you care and genuinely love go through that. I’m really, really happy that’s over.”

Scooter said Justin wanted to work, but he put the brakes on everything.

“As I started to see it going in the wrong direction, I started to prepare,” Scooter said. “I put deals in place where he was protected for the long run. And I started to prepare my company to scale, because I was not going to let him work. [After Journals] he wanted to tour, and I honestly at that time felt, if he toured, he could die….I was trying to do that job for a year and a half, and I failed every single day. It wasn’t until something happened that it clicked for [Justin]. He made the conscious decision as a young man: “I need to make a change in my own life.”

Scooter added, “I decided I needed six months of that. I looked at Robert Downey Jr. and all these people — when you ask for redemption, people will give it to you. But if you’re the boy who cried wolf, they’ll destroy you. Once I saw there was consistency I said, O.K., now it’s time to go back in the professional life. The click happened about 20 months ago. Six months after that, you start seeing me planning a [Comedy Central] roast. And then the Calvin Klein ads come, and the roast comes…”

Scooter Braun Opens Up About Justin Bieber & Ariana Grande's Scandals

Famed manager Scooter Braun is opening up about his clients Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande in a revealing interview with The New York Times.

When asked how he responded to Ariana‘s first mini-scandal when she was caught licking donuts in a California shop, he had some good advice.

“I tell her, you have to address the mistakes that you made and own them. Some of the words she used in that shop were things she needed to address, and she did,” he explained, adding that he thought there was an overreaction from the public.

Scooter also alluded to Justin‘s egg-throwing incidents.

“But I also think — not about her, but just in general — we’re getting a little ridiculous when it comes to doughnuts and eggs. The rock stars of ’70s were really [expletive]. Let’s talk about some real stuff. Why are we discussing that when we have real significant issues in the world? Like, gun control. And the fact that a presidential candidate is saying things that I find to be anti-American. These are the things we should be angry and frustrated about.”

“Of course, yeah, we lost our relationship for awhile,” Justin told USA Today. “She couldn’t really tell me anything; she would try, but I wasn’t listening to anybody and that sort of sucked. But our relationship is getting better now; we’re getting it back.”

As for his manager Scooter Braun, he said, “He’s in the picture, yeah. We also were on some weird terms, too, but now we’re back 100 percent.”

Justin Bieber Won't Be Defined by Mistakes, Says Scooter Braun

Scooter Braun gets candid about his longtime client Justin Bieber‘s career in this new interview with Complex magazine.

Here’s what the 33-year-old music mogul had to share:

On competition and aspiring to be Michael Jackson: “It’s funny, I talked to him about this today, and I feel like it’s not competition. You nailed it with aspiration, because when you have to give up that much of your life, it’s only worth it if you can strive to be great. When I was playing basketball in my backyard, I wanted to be Michael Jordan, because when you’re shooting the jumper in the backyard, you don’t want to be the sixth man. With Justin, it’s Michael Jackson and careers like that. But as he becomes more and more of a man each day, the challenge for him is learning who he is. He’s in such an incredible place right now, and he’s excited to share where he is with the world next year. It will shock some people and make others really happy. He’s ready to step up and be the man people want him to be, and he got there on his own time, like all of us did. So, right now, it’s less about Elvis and Michael, and more about him being the man he wants to be.”

On the shock factor: “It’s one, through his music, and two, through his candor, his openness about what he’s learned in the last year. Things get overblown, but sometimes he makes mistakes…”

On Justin’s mistakes: “Look, I’m not going to focus on anything specific, but the hardest part is being a little bit older [than your clients], and their actions aren’t necessarily actions you’d [take]. Sometimes it’s frustrating because you think, ‘I could’ve avoided that’ or ‘I could’ve helped you get through that,’ but then you realize that you are the person you are because you went through it, and they need the opportunity to go through it too. And if they do, you’re just supposed to be there to help them rise. I’m not interested in the mistakes that people make. I’m interested in how they react to them. That’s what defines us as adults. Being young, like Ariana [Grande] and Justin are, they will have opportunities to fall, and they will be defined by how they rise.”
