Amanda Seyfried Weighs In On the Possibility of 'Mamma Mia 3'

Amanda Seyfried is dishing on another Mamma Mia! movie.

Earlier this week, it was producer Judy Craymer revealed that she was working on possibly making a third installment in the franchise.

During a new interview with Collider, Amanda shared her thoughts on a possible third movie – and she isn’t that convinced it could happen right now.

“Well it’s a better story, because they had something to grow on,” Amanda said of the sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. “Like the first story had to match the stage show. So it was like, they were kind of stuck. With the second story, it could have been anything. Having Meryl [Streep]’s character die kind of gave us so many good storylines. It was kind of a genius idea because you’re like, no, we don’t want to lose her. But at the same time, look at what you can do, you can go back. And Lily James can play young Meryl. It was just perfect. It was so well written.”

“Listen, every single person in that movie would say yes in a heartbeat because we want to hang out with each other,” Amanda continued. “That’s what we talked about last time, like did we ever think that we’d end up here again on an Island in Croatia?”

Despite wanting to reunite with the cast again, Amanda isn’t sure there is a story or enough ABBA music for a third movie.

“So yeah, I wish there was a Mamma Mia 3, but I’ll tell you what – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again and I hope I’m wrong again,” Amanda admitted. “I don’t think there are enough ABBA songs to make a third movie. Because we’d have to use ‘Super Trooper’ again and we’d have to use ‘Mamma Mia’ again and have to use them in a different way.”

A Third 'Mamma Mia' Movie Is Reportedly In The Works

Mamma Mia #3 could actually be happening, according to one producer.

Producer Judy Craymer revealed to Daily Mail that a third movie is being planned, however, the coronavirus pandemic got in the way of some of the plans for it.

“I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months,” she said. “But then I got hit with COVID fog.”

Judy added that she thinks “one day there will be another film because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see.”

She also revealed the planned third movie would have four brand new songs penned by ABBA members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus.

This one star of the franchise recently reunited with the cast for a virtual Zoom call!

Meryl Streep in 'Mamma Mia 2': Creator Talks That Major Decision About Donna!

SPOILER ALERT - don’t continue reading if you don’t want to read what happens in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which is now in theaters!

Creator of the musical and the movies, Judy Craymer, is speaking to THR about the choice to “kill off” Donna, the character played by Meryl Streep.

“Well, she just wasn’t good enough, you know? [Laughs],” Judy joked about Meryl‘s acting ability. “To be honest, she was always a part of it. Would we have done another film without her? She was so glorious in the first movie and has so much affection for Mamma Mia! So, she was always a part of a conversation of another film. I think for her, it was a matter of what and how, and we also did chat occasionally about it. It was a matter of the right script.”

Judy continued, “Also, Meryl likes to conquer new things and she had played Donna Sheridan and been singing nine or so ABBA songs in the first movie. I think she felt that she liked the idea of leaving this to the younger ones and she wanted to be involved, but she wasn’t gonna take on such a big role. So, I think that helped explore the emotional heft of what [director and co-writer] Ol Parker wrote in the fact that it’s a story of life and marriage and loss and love, but also it’s very important to Meryl what song she does. If she was gonna sing, ‘My Love, My Life’ is a very, very strong song like ‘The Winner Takes It All.’ It’s a huge story telling song, it’s got a big emotional punch and, of course, she has this incredible voice. So, I think there were many decisions there, but it came very much from Meryl being a part of all of them. “
