1 Actor Auditioned to Play Both Harry Potter & Edward in 'Twilight' But Got Different Roles in the Franchises

Harry Potter and Twilight are two of the biggest young-adult film franchises of all time, and they put Daniel Radcliffe and Robert Pattinson on the map.

Both blockbusters also signify near misses for one actor who auditioned for the chance to play Harry Potter and Edward Cullen.

Daniel was only 11 years old when he portrayed the beloved boy wizard alongside Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 2000.

Eight years later, Robert was 22 when he was cast as the glittering vampire lead alongside Kristen Stewart in the first Twilight movie.

The franchises featured large and talented casts, and there’s a common thread between them – an actor who landed supporting roles in both after auditioning for the lead. He opened up about the experience in an interview.

Robert Pattinson Competed With 9 Actors to Play Edward in 'Twilight' (& He Almost Wasn't Cast for a Wild Reason!)

Robert Pattinson landed a star-making role playing Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise. However, he almost wasn’t cast over concerns he wasn’t attractive enough for the part.

At the time, Robert had already established himself as an emerging talent in Hollywood with his portrayal of Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter movies. However, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke recently revealed the shocking concerns about the actor’s appearance, which almost cost him the role.

Thankfully, the studio saw reason and agreed to cast Robert in the part. He played the lead, sparkling vampire in the blockbuster adaptations of author Stephenie Meyer‘s beloved novels.

Now that we’ve learned about the concerns, you might be interested in seeing who else was in the running to act alongside Kristen Stewart in the mega-popular saga.

Thousands of actors auditioned for the role, but a much smaller list of frontrunners and A-listers were actually considered. The shortlist includes a Schitt’s Creek star, several actors who booked other roles in Twilight and someone who admitted that they later regretted their audition.

It also includes Stephenie‘s first choice for Edward, who only learned that he was in the running years after the fact!

'Twilight' Author Originally Wanted These Actors to Play Edward, Bella & More!

Twilight hit theaters 15 years ago today on November 21, 2008 and we’re taking a look back at the author’s dream casting for the roles, before the films were made.

Author Stephenie Meyer, who wrote the Twilight book series, shared a blog post she wrote from 2007 that has recently resurfaced with her original actor and actress choices to play the title characters in the movies!

Back in 2007, before the first movie was made, Stephenie wrote on her blog, “My opinions on the movie matter to no one. I have no influence on what goes on with the movie at all. No one is going to ask who I think should star in Twilight.”

So basically, Stephenie‘s opinions on who should be cast weren’t taken into consideration.

The original movies starred Kristen Stewart as Bella and Robert Pattinson as Edward.
