The idea for the film is based on an original idea pitched by Colin, Matthew Bass and Theodore Bressman.

The wedding comedy “follows a soon-to-be-married couple and the family dramatics that ensue just weeks before the wedding.”

SNL‘s Lorne Michaels will produce the movie, which is in development while the studio finds a director. Universal’s senior executive vice president of production Erik Baiers will be overseeing the project.

Pete Davidson‘s recent movie was just pulled abruptly from drive-in theaters amid the pandemic. Find out what happened…

Pete Davidson's Movie 'The King of Staten Island' Abruptly Pulled From Drive-In Theaters

Pete Davidson‘s movie, The King of Staten Island, is being pulled from drive-in theaters.

The theaters were “abruptly informed they were not able to show the film,” Variety reported on Friday (June 12).

The movie was seemingly intended to debut in a limited number of theaters, mostly drive-ins, that were still open amid the pandemic, while also launching across premium video-on-demand platforms.

“The news has created consternation, and even outrage, in the close-knit community of drive-in operators, many of whom have been promoting showtimes and selling tickets for The King of Staten Island. Now, they’ve had to offer refunds and scramble to find new content to show under short notice. Universal didn’t give exhibitors any reasoning behind the hasty decision,” the outlet reported.

“There was no explanation. They changed their mind,” one theater owner told the publication.

However, it seems it might have all come down to an original miscommunication.

“Insiders at Universal chalked it up to an internal misunderstanding, saying The King of Staten Island was always intended to premium exclusively on-demand, however some executives unintentionally booked the film in about 100 theaters. When they realized the mistake, the studio went back to theaters and asked them not to play it,” Variety reports.

Judd Apatow also addressed the situation earlier in the week.

“THIS IS AN ERROR. THE KING OF STATEN ISLAND IS ONLY OPENING ON VOD FRIDAY. IT IS NOT OPENING IN THEATERS,” he wrote on Wednesday (June 10).

“I didn’t know it was still on the air…I mean like when you’re 16, you’re not watching political midnight shows,” he remarked.

“I was like 10, 12 years younger than everybody else. It felt like it was a joke.”

He went on to say that the show “drastically” changed his life, and he “started being taken seriously as a comic…it really changed my life.”

“It felt like very ‘Make a Wish-y…it felt like charity for sure,” he went on to describe the feeling.

“I was really confident as a comic because like you have to be. On stage is where I feel my most comfortable, but off stage, I never really thought I was a great comic or anything like that. I’m very self-hating.”

Pete Davidson Drops New Trailer for 'The King of Staten Island,' His New Movie Going to VOD!

Pete Davidson was going to make his big-screen starring debut in the movie The King of Staten Island, but the movie is going to VOD instead now due to movie theaters being shut down for the indefinite future.

The new comedy was written and directed by Judd Apatow and is a semi-autobiographical take on Pete’s life.

Here’s the synopsis: Scott (Davidson) has been a case of arrested development ever since his firefighter father died when he was seven. He’s now reached his mid-20s having achieved little, chasing a dream of becoming a tattoo artist that seems far out of reach. As his ambitious younger sister (Maude Apatow) heads off to college, Scott is still living with his exhausted ER nurse mother (Marisa Tomei) and spends his days smoking weed, hanging with the guys—Oscar (Ricky Velez), Igor (Moises Arias) and Richie (Lou Wilson)—and secretly hooking up with his childhood friend Kelsey (Bel Powley). But when his mother starts dating a loudmouth firefighter named Ray (Bill Burr), it sets off a chain of events that will force Scott to grapple with his grief and take his first tentative steps toward moving forward in life.

Steve Buscemi also stars in the movie as Papa, a veteran firefighter who takes Scott under his wing, and Pamela Adlon as Ray’s ex-wife, Gina.

The King of Staten Island is heading to VOD on June 12.

Pete Davidson Skips Latest 'Saturday Night Live' Episode After Criticizing the Show

Pete Davidson is taking a night off from Saturday Night Live.

The 26-year-old cast member was noticeably absent from the latest episode of the sketch comedy series on Saturday (March 7).

Pete‘s absence comes just a few weeks after his controversial interview where he said he thinks his time at SNL is coming to an end.

Also during the interview, Pete said he finds himself to be the “punchline” of a lot of the jokes and claimed that the cast members call him things like “a f*cking jerkface” behind his back.

Pete however did appear in a number of last week’s (February 29) sketches and was still in the opening monologue this past weekend.

A few nights before the latest episode of SNL, Pete attended the premiere of his new movie Big Time Adolescence in New York City.
