Reeva Steenkamp's Mother Will Always Oppose Oscar Pistorius' Early Release, Unless He Does This...

Oscar Pistorius was hoping to get out of prison early, but his request was denied.

The 36-year-old disgraced Paralympic gold medalist was convicted of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day back in 2013 and he has been behind bars in South Africa ever since. Her mother opposes the early release and will only support it under one condition.

Pistorius, who claimed that he mistook Reeva for an intruder, was originally sentence to six years in prison, but an appellate court changed the sentence to over 13 years in prison back in 2017.

When Pistorius was up for parole in 2021, his request was denied because he had not yet met with Steenkamp‘s family. This is a requirement under South Africa’s parole rules and he has since fulfilled it.

While arriving at the new parole hearing on Friday (March 31), Reeva‘s mom June was asked if she believes Oscar is remorseful.

Paralympic Athlete Oscar Pistorius Sentenced to 6 Years in Prison for Killing Girlfriend

Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to six years in prison by a South African court after murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp over three years ago on Valentine’s Day at his home, CNN reports.

The 29-year-old athlete has always claimed it was an accident, but lawyers argued he shot her deliberately after an argument. Barring any appeals, this will be the final ruling in the case that has lasted for years in the courts due to the high profile nature.

Back in 2014, Oscar was originally charged with manslaughter, but that ruling was overturned by a higher court.

Oscar Pistorius Indicted for Murder in Reeva Steenkamp Death

Oscar Pistorius arrives at the Pretoria Magistrates Court for an indictment hearing on Monday morning (August 19) in Pretoria, South Africa.

The 26-year-old sprint runner is accused of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp though he denies the claim, saying he mistook her for an intruder.

Oscar was seen crying and holding hands with his siblings before the hearing started. It is interesting to note that today would have marked Reeva‘s 30th birthday.

During the hearing, a trial date of March 3 was set. The trial will be presided over by a judge as South Africa does not have trial by jury. If convicted of premeditated murder, Oscar will serve a minimum sentence of 25 years in prison, according to USA Today.
