Elon Musk Is Personally Paying for Verified Twitter Checkmarks for Some People, Including Stephen King

Elon Musk is footing the bill.

The 51-year-old SpaceX and Twitter CEO, who is facing significant criticism and backlash for his plan to charge people for verification on Twitter after removing legacy checkmarks on Thursday (April 20), revealed he’s personally paying for some accounts.

Stephen King, who previously said he would never subscribe to a paid version of Twitter, still has a blue checkmark. He then tweeted that the information currently listed on his profile is incorrect.

Twitter has finally removed blue checkmarks from legacy verified accounts and now only people who have Twitter Blue subscriptions have the checkmarks.

The company’s new CEO and owner Elon Musk has been teasing for months that people would be losing their blue checkmarks unless they pay for the service… and now he’s finally removed them.

Stars like Justin Bieber, Jennifer Lopez, Oprah Winfrey, Kim Kardashian, and Lady Gaga are among those who no longer are verified.

If you click on a verified account’s blue checkmark, it now says, “This account is verified because they are subscribed to Twitter Blue and verified their phone number.”

All of these stars are seemingly paying $8 a month or $84 a year. There’s a chance that some of these celebs are verified right now because of a glitch and that they aren’t actually subsribed, but for now, Twitter is claiming they are.

Twitter took away legacy verified checkmarks on Thursday (April 20), and celebrities are reacting to the news.

As previously announced by CEO Elon Musk, users must now pay $8 a month for blue check verification on the social media platform by subscribing to Twitter Blue, regardless of whether you were previously verified.

The controversial policy caused plenty of stars to speak out against the money-making strategy, while other stars have seemingly paid for the service.

“Tomorrow, 4/20, we are removing legacy verified checkmarks,” the platform officially announced on Wednesday (April 19).

The 87-year-old spiritual leader apologized following a video that surfaced featuring an interaction with a child that has gone viral.

Elon Musk is making even more changes to Twitter.

The 51-year-old CEO of Twitter, who recently came under fire for his plan to make legacy verified users pay to keep their verification check, just made another change to the social media platform.

Now, when users log in, they’ll see the Shiba Inu that represents Dogecoin, the cryptocurrency that was engineered as a joke before getting traction by celebrity supporters like Elon, instead of the regular “home” icon.
