James also posted a pic with friends he hadn’t seen in awhile. “Home for the holidays, reunion Palo Alto style,” he wrote alongside the pic below. “The original members of ‘The Kool Brothas’.”
A recent interview of James was also published by John Ebersole. He talks a bit about how he was influenced artistically as a kid.
“When I was a teenager before the Internet and all that, my friends and I did have a lot of freedom,” James shared. “We would lie about what we were doing and where we were going because it was the suburbs and it was just that time. We were free to roam. There was a sense of freedom. At the same time because we didn’t have the internet, I did feel somewhat culturally starved. I had found some influences that were very important to me. I started watching movies – Gus Van Sant, My Own Private Idaho, Drugstore Cowboy. I was getting into literature. Mostly novels, Faulker, Melville, Hemingway, Steinbeck. I would see some theater in San Francisco. But the big movies that I was expected to see at that age were 80′s and 90′s blockbusters. At the time, I didn’t know how to access anything other than that. We’d go to Berkeley every once in awhile. Soundgarden was the first concert I ever saw at the Greek Theatre. I wasn’t aware of anything other than mainstream cultural events. When I look back at this time, there was this yearning for something more because I didn’t quite find artistic guides or influences.”
