Dave has a lot to celebrate this summer: his horror movie, The Rental, is at the top spot of the box office for a second weekend in a row. Due to the pandemic, drive-ins continued to lead at the box office, with a majority of the top 160 locations this weekend belonging to car venues. The Rental follows two couples who rent a vacation home for what should be a celebratory weekend get-away, and stars Dave‘s wife Alison Brie, Dan Stevens, Jeremy Allen White and Sheila Vand.

“What’s amazing here is that this is arguably the second time during the massive exhibition pandemic shutdown that a new release after Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls World Tour, has topped the weekend box office. More amazingly, it’s an indie movie,” the outlet reported.

“I have been truly fortunate to have a partner in IFC Films whose agility and creativity during this time has allowed us to have this incredible moment for our film. As a first time filmmaker, I’m beyond grateful to the audiences who supported us this weekend,” Dave said in a statement.

A majority of that is from drive-in theaters, which continue to be the leading exhibitors at the weekend box office.

The movie stars Dave‘s wife, Alison Brie.

Here’s a movie synopsis: Two couples on an oceanside getaway grow suspicious that the host of their seemingly perfect rental house may be spying on them. Before long, what should have been a celebratory weekend trip turns into something far more sinister, as well-kept secrets are exposed and the four old friends come to see each other in a whole new light.

Dave Franco Will Play a Young Vanilla Ice In A New Movie

Dave Franco is stepping into the role of a rapper in a new movie.

The 35-year-old actor and filmmaker will be playing Vanilla Ice in an upcoming flick, titled To The Extreme.

Dave spoke to Insider about his upcoming role in the biopic, saying that “we have been in development for a while but we are inching closer and closer to preproduction.”

He adds that the movie will be much like The Disaster Artist, which was directed by Dave‘s brother, James.

“With [The Disaster Artist], people expected us to make a broad comedy where we make fun of [The Room director] Tommy Wiseau, but the more real we played it, the funnier and heartfelt it was — that’s the tone we want for this one as well,” he shared.

Dave also spoke about speaking to Vanilla Ice – whose real name is Rob Van Winkle – regularly about the movie.

“Rob is such a sweet and intelligent guy and he’s been super helpful in the process of getting all the details correct and making us privy to information the public doesn’t know,” he shared. “Just talking to him I can’t help but think about the rabbit holes I’m going to go down to get ready for the role.”

The logline for the movie reads: From a high school dropout selling cars in Dallas to having the first hip-hop single to top the Billboard charts with ‘Ice Ice Baby,’ a young Vanilla Ice struggles with stardom, extortion attempts and selling out as he makes music history.

Just recently, Vanilla Ice ran into some controversy when he decided to do this during the pandemic.

Here's How Alison Brie & Dave Franco Met & Fell In Love

Alison Brie is opening up about just how she and husband Dave Franco met and fell in love.

While talking about their romantic comedy they wrote during quarantine on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the 37-year-old actress shared her love story with Dave and how it started, while he was filming Now You See Me.

“It starts off in New Orleans at Madri Gras, where all great love stories begin,” she joked, before sharing the short story on the program.

“I was there with some friends,” Alison recalled. “It was some incredible matchmaking done by my friend Jules, after we ran into Dave at the airport. The two of them are friends and she had invited him out to dinner with us there. He was sitting next to her across the table and…my friend texts me under the table and says ‘You should hook up with Dave’…and I responded with ‘Yes please’ with a lot of thumbs up emojis. A very enthusiastic response.”

She went on, saying that Jules actually showed Dave the text.

“He was like ‘I’m in!’” Alison shared, saying that their friend asked him not to tell her that she showed him her text, before the same friend told her that she showed him her text.

Alison continued that her romance with Dave continued on after meeting up again in New York, where it was the “wining and dining, romantic portion of our meeting each other. He left a secret note in my sweatshirt on our last day of our trip which read ‘Come with me to Paris’.”

Check out her interview below, where she reveals why they didn’t use their love story as the basis for their rom-com.

Dave Franco & Alison Brie Wrote a Rom-Com During Quarantine

Dave Franco just revealed what he and wife Alison Brie have been doing in quarantine – writing a movie!

During his interview with Variety, the 35-year-old filmmaker and actor opened up about the romantic comedy film the two wrote together during the stay at home order in California.

“It’s a genre that we both love, but when we looked at the landscape of rom-coms over the past decade, it feels like the bar is set really low,” Dave explained. “There’s a trend where rom-coms have an overly bright aesthetic and the concepts are really silly and the acting isn’t grounded.”

He adds, “We looked back on classics like When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, Pretty Woman…When you look at those films, you remember how grounded they are and how great the acting is.”

Dave also opened up about Alison, raving over her performance skills and directing her in his new film, The Rental.

“She’s a unique actor in the way that she’s able to balance heavy drama with moments of levity, and it was just so comforting for me to have her there through the process,” he shared.

Dave added, “As a first-time director, there were moments where I would get in my head and start to doubt myself. It was invaluable to have her there to build me up when I needed to be, and to remind me that we were doing good work.”

With social distancing rules in place, Dave and Alison hosted a drive-in screening for The Rental last month. See the pics here!
