Creative Arts Emmys 2020 Will Go Virtual, Primetime Emmys Still a Question Mark

The Television Academy has revealed some major updates to the events leading up to the 2020 Emmy Awards this year amid safety concerns due to the Coronavirus (aka COVID-19).

The Creative Arts Emmys, which were supposed to air this year on September 12 and 13, will now be virtual events. The creative arts awards focus on aspects of production like art direction, casting, cinematography, costume, editing, makeup, sound mixing, technical direction, camerawork, music, and more.

In addition, the annual Governors Ball dinners, which take place after the Creative Arts Emmys and Primetime Emmys, have been cancelled and that decision was made “as a precautionary measure to protect the health and safety of Emmy winners, nominees and guests during the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Variety reports.

“This has been an incredibly challenging time for our industry; and though we are now making plans to get back to work, we know there are many still suffering from the work stoppage caused by the coronavirus,” Television Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma added. “As we strive to do the right thing for our community with these changes to our annual events, the Television Academy is also pleased to support those still in need with a $1 million donation to The Actors Fund COVID-19 Relief Fund.”

The actual Emmys are still set for the September 20 air date on ABC, however, it’s unclear if that show will go on as planned or if it will be in a virtual format.

The Academy is dedicated to delivering a show that “honors television’s unparalleled role throughout 2020 in bringing people together during a worldwide pandemic as well as acknowledge and support the unprecedented national and global demand for social justice and equality.”

Emmy Awards 2020 Will Still Happen on September 20, But Format Is Still Unknown

The 2020 Emmy Awards have been scheduled to take place on September 20 and the Television Academy still plans on keeping the show on that date.

It’s currently unknown how the show is going to be presented, but it seems the show will still go on in some sort of format.

ABC is airing the Emmys this year and network exec Rob Mills told Variety that there’s no update on the telecast yet, “other than they’re going to happen in some way shape or form, but we have a little bit of time. Because we have the benefit of time, it’s much easier to figure it out. I don’t know what they’ll look like, but they will happen.”

“The Emmys are still going to happen,” Mills said, “But we still don’t know what they’re going to look like because we just don’t know where the winds are going to blow in the next few months.”

The nominations announcement has already been pushed back by two weeks to July 28.

Anna Kendrick Could Get 3 Emmy Noms for Acting This Year

Anna Kendrick has been having a big year in TV and she could get three different acting noms at the 2020 Emmy Awards!

The Oscar-nominated actress stars in two series – Love Life and Dummy – and the Disney+ movie Noelle.

Love Life will be released on HBO Max on May 27, just days before the eligibility cutoff for the upcoming Emmys. It’s an anthology series that will tell a new story in each season, so it’s currently unclear if the show will be submitted as a comedy series or a limited series, according to Variety.

If it is submitted as a comedy series, Anna will be up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. If it’s submitted as a limited series, she has a chance at getting two nominations in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie category. The Disney+ movie Noelle will also be eligible in that category!

Anna also stars in the new Quibi series Dummy and it’s unclear how the new streaming service plans to submit their shows. Dummy is a short-form series with 10 episodes that range from six to nine minutes, so she likely will be up for Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series.

Emmy Awards 2020 Voting Pushed Back, 'For Your Consideration' Events Suspended Amid Pandemic

The 2020 Emmy Awards are already being shifted around due to the global health crisis.

The first round of voting has been moved from June 15 to July 2, and eligible episodes can now air through the end of June, THR reported Friday (March 27).

The TV Academy leaders met remotely on Thursday night (March 26) to discuss the show’s changed schedule, which had not yet been affected until now due to the pandemic.

The date for the actual Primetime Emmys is not changed, but the “For Your Consideration” events are suspended.

“Though it is something of a no-brainer at this point, the TV Academy is taking a firm stance on FYC events, suspending them for this season whether with ‘a live audience, streaming or recorded for posting on a viewing platform,’” THR reported.

“There is entire economy built around Emmy campaigning, and it’s only become more robust as the number of series and platforms has skyrocketed in recent years. Cutting through the noise means hosting panels, sending mailers, stunts and expensive outdoor, print, radio and TV advertising, each an expensive endeavor that requires significant planning. Considering the new constraints, strategists will likely have to take dramatic new approaches,” they went on to report.

Many events are being postponed or canceled amid the crisis. Find out what else…
