Madonna Issues Response to Backlash Over Aretha Franklin Tribute at VMAs 2018

Madonna has released a statement in response to the backlash over her tribute to the late Aretha Franklin at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards.

“I was asked to present video of the year by MTV! And then they asked me to share any anecdotes I had in my career connected to Aretha Franklin! I shared a part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her! That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment,” Madonna posted on Instagram.

She continued, “Unfortunately most people have short attention spans, and are so quick to judge. I love Aretha! R.E.S.P.E.C.T. 🙏🏼.”

Viewers were slamming Madonna on social media over the speech as it spoke more about her life than Aretha‘s life and legacy.

Madonna Pays Tribute to Aretha Franklin at VMAs 2018 by Telling Her Audition Story

Madonna appears on stage to pay tribute to the late Aretha Franklin at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards held at Radio City Music Hall on Monday (August 20) in New York City.

The legendary entertainer was at the event to present the award for Video of the Year and she also gave a speech about singing an Aretha song at an audition before becoming a star.

Madonna decided to sing “Natural Woman” at the audition and she didn’t get the role, but the producers wanted to fly her to Paris to make her a star. She ended up leaving Paris as she didn’t think she earned the opportunity yet.

“There is a connection!” Madonna said after telling the long story. “Because none of this would have happened, could have happened without our Lady of Soul. She led me to where I am today. And I know she influenced so many people in this house tonight. I want to thank you, Aretha, for empowering all of us. R-E-S-P-E-C-T.”

The legendary entertainer was the featured performer at the star-studded event, which is often referred to as the biggest night in fashion every year.

“People tell me to shut my mouth/ That I might get burned/ Keep your beautiful lies/ ‘Cause I’m not concerned,” she sings in the new song.

Madonna Explains Why She Left America & Moved to Portugal

Madonna is explaining her decision to move to Portugal with four of her six children, David Banda and Mercy James, 12, and twins Stella and Esther, 5.

The superstar explained her reasoning in an interview with Vogue Italia.

“My son David, who is going to be 13 on September 24th, has wanted to play soccer professionally for years. I’ve been desperate to get him into the best academies with the best coaches, but the level of football in America is much lower than the rest of the world,” Madonna explained. “I saw his frustration, and I also felt it was a good time. I felt like we needed a change, and I wanted to get out of America for a minute – as you know, this is not America’s finest hour – not that leaving America makes anything different or changes anything. I’ve lived in other places; I lived in London for 10 years. I like to put myself in uncomfortable situations and take risks.”
