Madonna: 'I've Always Felt Oppressed'

Madonna is iconic on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar magazine’s February 2017 issue, on newsstands January 17.

Here’s what the 58-year-old superstar had to share with the mag:

On feeling oppressed and living an unconventional life: “I’ve always felt oppressed. I know a lot of people would go, ‘Oh, that’s ridiculous for you to say that. You’re a successful white, wealthy pop star,’ but I’ve had the shit kicked out of me for my entire career, and a large part of that is because I’m female and also because I refuse to live a conventional life. I’ve created a very unconventional family. I have lovers who are three decades younger than me. This makes people very uncomfortable. I feel like everything I do makes people feel really uncomfortable.”

On the election results and president-elect Donald Trump: “On election night I was sitting at a table with my agent, who is also one of my very best friends, and we were truly praying… It was just like watching a horror show… I went to sleep, and since that night, I wake up every morning and it’s like when you break up with somebody who has really broken your heart. You wake up and for a second you’re just you, and then you go, ‘Oh, the person I love more than anything has just broken my heart, and I’m devastated and I’m broken and I have nothing. I’m lost.’ That’s how I feel every morning. I wake up and I go, ‘Wait a second. Donald Trump is the president. It’s not a bad dream. It really happened.’ It’s like being dumped by a lover and also being stuck in a nightmare.”

On censorship, equality, and sexual expression: “I believe in freedom of expression, I don’t believe in censorship. I believe in equal rights for all people. And I believe women should own their sexuality and sexual expression. I don’t believe there’s a certain age where you can’t say and feel and be who you want to be.”

The 58-year-old entertainer was honored at Billboard’s Women In Music 2016 Luncheon for many achievements this year – including extending her record as the highest-grossing female touring artist of all time in 2016 – on Friday (December 9) in New York City.

Madonna was introduced by close pal Anderson Cooper who gave a heartfelt tribute to the queen of pop before she hit the stage to give her powerful speech, where she addressed sexism, misogyny, and feminism in the music industry.

“It’s not so much about receiving this award as it is having this opportunity to stand before you and say thank you,” Madonna said at the end of her speech. “Not only to the people who have loved and supported me along the way, you have no idea…you have no idea how much your support means. But to the doubters and naysayers and everyone who gave me hell and said I could not, that I would not or I must not – your resistance made me stronger, made me push harder, made me the fighter that I am today. It made me the woman that I am today. So thank you.”

Lady Gaga Praises Madonna on Twitter, Fans React

Lady Gaga took to Twitter to praise Madonna for her speech at the Billboard Women In Music 2016 Luncheon, which was televised last night.

“your speech at the Billboard Music Awards was inspiring. You’re so brave & strong. Thanks for being that for us girls we need that.,” Gaga tweeted at Madonna.

Fans began freaking out because there have been feud rumors between Madonna and Gaga for years.

“The only time I ever criticized Lady Gaga was when I felt like she blatantly ripped off one of my songs,” Madonna told Rolling Stone last year. “It’s got nothing to do with ‘she’s taking my crown’ or ‘she’s in some space of mine.’ She has her thing. I do think she’s a very talented singer and songwriter. It was just that one issue.”

“I don’t mean to disrespect Madonna … she’s a nice lady,” Gaga said back in October on the “Beats 1” radio show. “And she’s had a fantastic, huge career. She’s the biggest pop star of all time. But I play a lot of instruments. I write all my own music. I spend hours and hours a day in the studio. I’m a producer. I’m a writer. What I do is different.”

Madonna was introduced by close pal Anderson Cooper who gave a heartfelt tribute to the queen of pop.

Taking the mic, Madonna gave an extremely powerful and blunt speech where she described the hardships she faced before making it big in the music industry.

She recalled the abuse, bullying, and sexism she faced in her 30-year career.
