Missy Elliott happily strikes a pose with Lizzo while her 2019 MTV Video Music Awards after party held on Monday (August 26) in New York City.

The 48-year-old music icon and the 31-year-old “Truth Hurts” hit-maker were joined at the event by Cardi B, Adriana Lima, Lil Kim, Queen Latifah, Regina King, Winnie Harlow, Naturi Naughton, Ice T and his wife Coco Austin.

At the after party, guests enjoyed specialty Courvoisier Cognac cocktails throughout the evening.

Missy Elliott performed a medley of her hits, including “Get Your Freak On,” “Work It,” “Pass That Dutch” and “Lose Control,” before accepting the Video Vanguard Award at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. Watch it here.

The 48-year-old music icon performed a medley of her hits before accepting the Video Vanguard Award at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards at the Prudential Center on Monday night (August 26) in Newark, New Jersey.

Missy Elliott is accepting the night’s big award!

The 48-year-old music icon accepted the Video Vanguard Award at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards on Monday night (August 26) at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

“I promised I wouldn’t cry…I have worked diligently for over two decades,” she told the crowd.

“I never thought that I would be standing up here receiving this award. It means so much to me. I promise it don’t go unnoticed – the support and love that y’all have shown me over the years,” she said.

She also shouted out artists that inspired her work, including Busta Rhymes, Peter Gabriel and Madonna.

Missy Elliott is honoring Aaliyah 18 years after her death.

The 48-year-old “Throw It Back” rapper took to Twitter on Sunday (August 25) to post a photo of the late singer along with a heartfelt message.

“Aaliyah it’s been 18 years now but your STYLE & MUSIC still continues to IMPACT all the generations behind you! 🙌🏾,” Missy wrote. “May you rest In paradise in PEACE🙏🏾😇❤️.”

“You will NEVER be forgotten so MANY LOVE you Babygirl🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾,” Missy Elliott added. “WE ALL MISS YOU!❤️❤️”

Aaliyah passed away on August 25, 2001, at age 22 in a plane crash.

Missy Elliott is here to “Throw It Back“!

In addition to dropping her brand new Iconology EP, the 48-year-old Grammy-winning trailblazer debuts the music video for “Throw It Back,” one of the five tracks featured on the project.

The dance-heavy clip opens with a cameo from Teyana Taylor, who schools a young girl on “the innovator of all innovators, the game-changing sensation.”

Missy Elliott‘s first body of music she’s released in over 14 years, the Iconology EP, is available to stream here.
