Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska are teaming up for the big screen adaptation of Patricia Highsmith‘s novella Carol.

The story is “set in 1950s New York that follows the burgeoning relationship between two very different women,” according to THR, which adds that production is slated to begin February 2013 in London and New York.

Producers Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen said they “were thrilled” to have Cate and Mia on board for the project, “two of the most talented actors working today.”

Cate can next be seen on the big screen in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which is slated to hit theaters in December.

The movie co-stars Orlando Bloom, Luke Evans, Elijah Wood, and Evangeline Lilly.

The 42-year-old Oscar-winning actress is currently starring in the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of Big and Small at the Barbican Theatre in London.

Cate will be gearing up for her directorial debut in the screen adaptation of Aussie novelist Tim Winton‘s collection of short stories, “The Turning.” Cate will be one of 17 directors taking on the project, one for each story of the book. Fellow Aussie Mia Wasikowska will also be making her directorial debut in this project.

Cate Blanchett and her family have a fun filled day of sightseeing on Tuesday (April 3) in Paris, France.

The 42-year-old actress is currently in the City of Lights performing in Big and Small with the Sydney Theatre Company.

While on break from performing, Cate, her hubby Andrew Upton and their three boys Roman, Ignatius, and Dashiell took in the beautiful sights of the city. They visited the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe, and La Pyramide Inversee!

In Big and Small, audiences are whisked down a rabbit hole and into a curious Wonderland-like world where Cate‘s character is always trying to fit in.

Here’s what the 42-year-old Aussie actress had to share:

On her reluctance to direct film: “There is a film I’d love to direct, but I just don’t know if I’ve got the patience. In theatre, you can have an idea and get on with it. In film, you hear of people sitting on an idea for eight years, by which time the idea has changed and evolved and become something else.”

On wanting to play a James Bond villain: “Oh God! Yes! I’d be there in a heartbeat. I love Lotta Lenya [Ross Klebb in 1963’s From Russia with Love]. She had a club foot and a limp. I’m not a purist in that way.”

On acting as her emotional outlet: “When you’re a teenager, you act things out rather than experience them, so that through a relationship being cataclysmic, you reach some emotional catharsis. I have that through work now, so I don’t need to act it out in my daily life. Not that I think all work is therapy.”
