Issa Rae Gives Stephen Colbert Her Favorite Advice: 'Don't Be Afraid To Be A Bitch'

Issa Rae stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert last night (August 9) ahead of Sunday’s return (August 12) of her Emmy-nominated HBO show Insecure!

The 33-yeare-old talked about meeting celebrities, her mom’s concern for the show’s racy content and cleared up rumors that she turned down Drake at a Golden Globes party.

Issa also talked about getting approached by up-and-coming talent for advice and admitted sometimes she doesn’t “know what to tell them because everybody’s journey is different.”

“As a showrunner, being in the industry, just as a woman, once you’re labeled like difficult, your career is kinda over, cuz then it’s like everybody’s saying, ‘Oh she’s hard to work with, beware,’ and then you don’t get many chances to fail,” Issa said.

The biggest slice of advice Rae could offer, though, came from a few of her Hollywood leading women friends — Shonda Rhimes, Ava DuVernay, Mara Brock Akil and Debbie Allen. “Don’t be afraid to be a b***h,” Rae said. “And it’s so true.”

That same day, Issa posed at Samsung’s After Unpacked: An Evening for the Rest of Us event held at Samsung 837 where the company revealed the all-new Samsung Galaxy Note9.

Issa Rae Opens Up About Confidence & Ignoring the Haters

Issa Rae is featured in the July 2018 issue of Cosmopolitan, out now.

Here’s what the 33-year-old Insecure actress had to say…

On gaining and maintaining confidence: “Confidence comes from knowing your s–t is good. I’m for sure confident when it comes to work and trying to fulfill my dreams. Socially, the confidence has teetered, but that’s growing as I’m coming into who I am.”

On ignoring the haters: “There comes a point when you have to block it out but remain humble—that’s the balance I’m trying to navigate.”

On becoming a face of CoverGirl: “[It was] kind of surreal. Like, ‘Wow, y’all are choosing me?’ It was for the little girl in me who never thought that this would be possible. There’s power in representation. There’s affirmation in representation.”

On how she wants to see women of color to be seen on screen: “I prioritize making dark-skinned women desirable. You don’t see a lot of dark-skin representation. That’s been overlooked. Also, seeing them as beautiful, in addition to desirable, which are two very different things.”

Benedict Cumberbatch, Claire Foy, Michael B Jordan, & Issa Rae Cover 'Variety'

Claire Foy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael B Jordan, and Issa Rae are on the cover of Variety‘s new Variety Studio: Actors on Actors Presented by Shutterstock issues.

Also on a separate cover are Laura Dern and Angela Bassett, pictured below. Here’s what they had to share with the mag…

Michael, on what he told his agents: “I told my agents, “I don’t want to go out for any role that’s written for African-Americans in the breakdown.” I said, “I want to go for any white males. That’s it. That’s all I want to do.” Because me playing that role is going to make it what it is.”

Angela, on choosing 9-1-1: “For so long, I think I resisted the idea of doing a show that may go seven years or more. Because just the nature of this business, I love how you get to change and grow and put on different characters and ideas and suits and interact with different people and directors and actors and situations and locations. The idea of staying put isn’t one that I’ve embraced, but as you mature, you try to find roles and situations that are interesting. This was one.”

Benedict, on the guilt of landing a big role: “You feel this sense of guilt like, “Are you sure you’ve got this right? I mean, there’s literally five people I know who would cut off their right hand to do it, and who would be much better, in my opinion.” All the time. It’s like you know how lucky you are when it works out for you. That’s another key motivator for me — just to sort of prove people’s trust or faith in me. I just go, “Right. Well, they’ve made this choice. I’ve really, really got to fulfill.”
