Gabrielle Union Breaks Silence on What Really Happened at 'America's Got Talent'

Gabrielle Union is breaking her silence on what went down during her sole season as a judge on America’s Got Talent. She was let go after a series of alleged incidents which included racially charged moments and lodging complaints about cigarette smoke that was making her ill.

“At the end of all this, my goal is real change — and not just on this show but for the larger parent company. It starts from the top down,” Gabrielle told Variety. “My goal is to create the happiest, most high-functioning, inclusive, protected and healthy example of a workplace.”

She added that her decision to complain about Simon Cowell’s cigarette smoking on her first day was a dire one for an individual “coming onto a set and you are literally met with the very definition of a toxic work environment, and it’s being carried out by the most powerful person on the production.”

She said, “I couldn’t escape. I ended up staying sick for two months straight. It was a cold that lingered, and turned into bronchitis, because I couldn’t shake it. It impacted my voice, which affects my ability to do my job.”

“It was challenging to tend to my illness without being made to feel like I’m responsible for my own sickness. It put me in a position from day one where I felt othered. I felt isolated. I felt singled out as being difficult, when I’m asking for basic laws to be followed. I want to come to work and be healthy and safe and listened to,” she continued.

“Sending love and appreciation to everyone that mothers others. No matter the route, the journey, the title, we thank you and recognize you today and everyday. To everyone who is feeling pain on this day, I feel you, I see you and you are not alone. You are never alone. Love and light good people,” she wrote.

Here’s what she recently said about her “beautiful and real” blended family dynamic…

“I wanted to create a love letter to my daughter to let her know that even though her entry into our family was a bit non-traditional, we love her and wanted her. And she is celebrated,” Gabrielle told People.

“This is also my love letter to every non-traditional family, blended families, that no matter how you became a new family, it is beautiful and real.”

She also opened up about her 18-month-old, affectionately nicknamed “Shady Baby,” and how she’s behaving amid quarantine.

“It’s changed dramatically in quarantine; I think it just sped up her learning curve. She likes to do things on her own. She wants to be a part of the conversation. But she’s also very clear about her boundaries.”

“She’s very suspicious. And considering she only has a few words, she communicates perfectly,” she added with a laugh.

The family also includes Dwyane‘s 18-year-old son Zaire and 6-year-old son Xavier, as well as 12-year-old daughter Zaya, from previous relationships.

“I stay in the bathroom probably a little longer than necessary just to give myself a little more time to pull it together! Just to cry or mindlessly scroll social media, whatever that is. We all give each other those extra long times in the bathroom to do whatever it is you sort of need to do with the door closed and have your own space,” she said of her busy life at home.

Gabrielle also said it’s weird to get recognition about embracing her daughter’s transition. Here’s what she said…

Gabrielle Union Says It's Weird to Get Recognition About Embracing Daughter Zaya's Transition

Gabrielle Union is the latest celeb guest to stop by The Ellen DeGeneres Show during quarantine.

The 47-year-old LA’s Finest star chatted about being stuck in quarantine with her family, baby Kaavia and her new book, “Welcome to the Party”.

Gabrielle also chatted about how getting recognition for being accepting of daughter Zaya‘s transition is weird.

“To us, it’s a little odd to get any kind of recognition for doing what you’re supposed to do, which is love and accept and embrace your kids,” Gabrielle said.

She added, “Unfortunately, there are so many people who just don’t. There are so many people who really truly feel like their kids are disposable and if they’re not perfect images of them, they’re not interested. It’s heartbreaking.”

Dwyane, who appeared on Ellen earlier in the year, was also full of support for Zaya.
