Gabrielle Union Says 'More Changes Are Needed' After NBC Releases New Plans to Prevent Workplace Harassment

Gabrielle Union is reacting to NBC’s new workplace harassment prevention plans.

Universal TV and Streaming chairman Mark Lazarus issued a memo to employees on Tuesday (July 7) where he explained that the company is upping it’s efforts to create a safe working environment where employees feel safe to come forward with issues of misconduct, according to Hollywood Reporter.

Shortly after the memo was released, Gabrielle reacted to it, saying that it’s a step in the right direction, but “more changes are needed” to prevent further cases like hers.

Gabrielle appeared as a judge on season 14 of America’s Got Talent. In November 2019, she alleged that there was a racist and “toxic” work culture on set of the show.

“Great start by NBC to recognize the need to not turn away & ignore racial & gender discrimination on programs like #AGT,” Gabrielle tweeted. “More changes are needed however like stopping executives from intimidating talent from sharing their experience of racism in their own workplace investigations.”

Back in June, Gabrielle filed a discrimination complaint against America’s Got Talent producers. In the complaint, Gabrielle accused NBC exec Paul Telegdy of threatening her for speaking out against racism on set. NBC is denying Gabrielle‘s claim.

Gabrielle Union Says Simon Cowell Doesn't Think the Law Applies to Him; Calls Out NBC for Independent Investigation

Gabrielle Union is opening up about her experience on America’s Got Talent along with her involvement in NBC’s investigation surrounding her exit.

During an appearance on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, the 47-year-old actress said that she thought the show would be easy and fun, but recalled that things weren’t easy from the start, and she’s calling out AGT creator Simon Cowell.

“Day one, Simon Cowell is smoking cigarettes inside. I’ve worked a long time. I’ve worked with all kinds of people. I’ve never experienced that,” Gabrielle said, while also mentioning that she is severely allergic to cigarette smoke.

“When your boss — the person who has the ability to determine who gets opportunities and who doesn’t — doesn’t believe that the law applies to him or the rules apply to him, and he does it in full view of NBC, Fremantle and Syco and no one cares about Simon Cowell exposing all of these employees to second hand smoke, that’s day one,” Gabrielle claimed.

“What message do you think that sends to anyone that has an issue with the very real racism and the lack of accountability?” Gabrielle continued. “And it goes on and on and on.”

Gabrielle went on to discuss the investigation into AGT that NBC commissioned, saying that she thought it was going to be “independent.”

“I decided to participate in this investigation,” Gabrielle said. “Silly me, I thought ‘independent’ was independent. But when NBC and [producers] Fremantle and Syco pay for that investigation, they control it.”

“They turn over what they believe to be inflammatory things, or things that are not advantageous to me,” Gabrielle alleged. “In the middle of an investigation about racism and discrimination? This is what’s happening from the top of the company.”

Gabrielle then shared her thoughts on how Hollywood could treat black people in the industry.

“There has to be an increase in representation across the board from the top to the bottom. We have to be able to be okay with change that doesn’t always benefit us,” Gabrielle continued. “Some people believe that … the only way to lead is to center yourself in every argument. But what I’m learning throughout this whole process is, sometimes the best way to lead is to get out of the way and make room for someone else. We have to dismantle the whole thing. We can’t put a Band-Aid on a gunshot wound.”

Earlier this month, Gabrielle filed a discrimination complaint against America’s Got Talent producers. In the complaint, Gabrielle accused NBC exec Paul Telegdy of threatening her for speaking out against racism on set. NBC is denying Gabrielle‘s claim.

Gabrielle Union Is Turning LGBTQ+ Activist George M. Johnson's Memoir Into a TV Series!

Gabrielle Union has optioned the rights to turn LGBTQ+ activist and journalist George M. Johnson‘s memoir “All Boys Aren’t Blue” into a television series!

The series is being developed at Sony Pictures TV, where Gabrielle‘s production company I’ll Have Another Productions has a first-look deal, according to Deadline.

The book explores Johnson‘s “childhood and adolescence growing up in Plainfield, NJ as well as his college years attending an HBCU in Virginia. From memories of getting his teeth kicked out by bullies at age five to his loving relationship with his grandmother whom he affectionately called ‘Nanny,’ to his first sexual experience, the young adult memoir showcases the life of growing up under the duality of being black and queer.”

Gabrielle credited her experience as the mother of a queer identifying daughter as one of the reasons for taking on this project.

“Queer black existence has been here forever yet rarely has that experience been shown in literature or film and television,” Gabrielle said in a statement. “Being a parent to a queer identifying daughter has given me the platform to make sure that these stories are being told in a truthful and authentic way and George’s memoir gives you the blueprint for that and more. What I love about this book is that it not only offers a space for queer kids of color to be seen and heard but it also offers those who see themselves outside of that standpoint to be held accountable and help them better understand what it takes to truly have acceptance with someone who is considered other.”

George said about working with Gabrielle, “She’s someone who is not only a champion in the fight for supporting marginalized communities of color but the work she’s doing as a storyteller and producer is lifting every voice who hasn’t had the opportunity to be heard.”

You can order the memoir now on Amazon.

Gabrielle Union & Jessica Alba's 'L.A.'s Finest' Season 2 Release Delayed at Last Minute

L.A.’s Finest, the television show starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba, was supposed to premiere three new episodes today on Spectrum’s On Demand service. However, those episode releases have now been delayed.

The news of the delay of the police show – which is an offshoot of Bad Boys – has been pushed to a “later date in 2020,” TV Line reports.

This change comes as protests are happening across America and the world against police brutality and for Black Lives Matter after the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others.

Neither Jessica nor Gabrielle have spoken about the move just yet. Meanwhile, if you haven’t seen season one of the show and don’t have access to Spectrum On Demand…you’re in luck!
