Julia Louis-Dreyfus' 'Veep' Earns Solid Ratings

The ratings for Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ new HBO show, Veep, are in!

The series premiere drew 1.7 million viewers (a combination of its two airings of 1.4 million and 296,000 viewers) – up 34 percent in comparison to Eastbound and Down‘s average audience.

“Confession time: If someone told me a show that was equal parts The West Wing and The Larry Sanders Show was forthcoming, I’d already be intrigued. Throw in Julia Louis-Dreyfus and a strong supporting cast, including Anna Chlumsky, Arrested Development‘s Tony Hale and Upright Citizens Brigade vet Matt Walsh, and it’s hard to see how it can miss. Sunday night’s premiere episode definitely lived up to its potential,” said one review on CNN.

The 51-year-old actress takes on the role of Selina Meyer, a former senator turned vice president of the United States.

“It is a true delight to work with HBO and [show creator] Armando Iannucci. I take the role of vice president very seriously, and although everyone says this is a comedy, I don’t think there is anything funny at all about me being a heartbeat away from the presidency,” Julia previously said in a statement.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Talks 'Veep', Covers 'Capitol File'

Julia Louis-Dreyfus takes the cover of Capitol File magazine’s latest issue.

Here’s what the 50-year-old actress, who stars in the new HBO series Veep, had to share:

On her character on the show: “You will never know what party she’s in. There’s talk of the opposition and that party and this party, but it is never identified. So this is not a partisan politics show in any way. What it is, though, is a show about political behavior. And that is where the comedy comes from. The right thing happens for the wrong reason, or the wrong thing happens for the right reason. That is what the show is about. It’s for anybody who likes a good joke. We poke fun at it all, all politicians, and the way Washington is run.”

On getting her start on Saturday Night Live: “When SNL first began, I was their demographic-a young teenager watching Gilda and Belushi and Bill Murray and all those guys – and I was just riveted. It was a huge Cinderella-getting-to-go-to-the-ball kind of experience, really.”

On growing up in Washington, D.C.: “It’s nice to be back here and know that my parents are close by. It’s so funny, that it’s almost full circle that we’re shooting a show and driving around in a vice-presidential motorcade in my hometown. It’s really surreal. When I was growing up, it was a conservative political time. Of course, you can never really appreciate, to a certain extent, the city you grow up in until you come back to it. So it’s nice to return as an adult to Washington and its environs. You can really take in the fabulousness of this area. And it is indeed that. It is such a great city.”
