Yara Shahidi Gives Another Powerful Speech, This Time at the GLSEN Awards!

Yara Shahidi keeps blowing away everyone with her wise words and that was just the case at the 2018 GLSEN Respect Awards!

The 18-year-old grown-ish actress gave a speech while accepting the GLSEN Gamechanger Award on Friday night (October 19) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

“We should all feel deserved and supported in expressing our right to being our whole selves, limited by nothing regardless of ethnicity, gender identities, sexuality, ability, religion or any other identity that we choose,” Yara said during her speech (via People). “There should be safe spaces in which our presence and existence are inherently valued, but more than that, I believe in promoting equity. It is dangerous to promote an identity by narrative.”

Yara credited her dad Afshin Shahidi for inspiring her activism.

“Thank you to my Papa for sharing with my mama, my brother, my aunties, my uncles, my brother, basically all of us, that a fight to help one person belong is a fight that belongs to all of us,” she said. “I am so grateful to stand amongst you.”

Yara met up with fellow actresses Storm Reid and Kat Graham at the event.

FYI: Yara is wearing a Tory Burch dress. Storm is wearing a Self-Portrait dress.

Yara Shahidi Gives Inspiring Speech at #GirlHero Awards Event

Yara Shahidi speaks on stage while being honored at the Girl Up #GirlHero Awards Luncheon on Sunday (October 14) at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The 18-year-old black-ish actress gave an inspiring speech that paid tribute to her mother for teaching her to know her own worth.

“Not only what she’s done for me, but what you’ve done for my brothers as well, is created an environment where it is the expectation that women follow their passions, but more than that, that we walk into every room understanding our worth,” Yara said. “No matter what faulty criteria is put on our voice, we walk in understanding that our existence is criteria enough, is proof enough of our ability to speak on certain issues, on our ability to convey empathy. And more than anything, our importance and emphasis on globalism.”

Also in attendance at the event were Sabrina Carpenter, Katherine McNamara, Ariel Winter, Monique Coleman, and Elsie Fisher with Eighth Grade director Bo Burnham.

FYI: Yara is wearing a Carolina Herrera outfit and boots. Sabrina is wearing a Marc Jacobs outfit.

Yara Shahidi Shares The Issues She's Most Passionate About

Yara Shahidi looks stunning on the cover of Elle‘s Women in Hollywood issue, available on October 23rd.

Here’s what the 18-year-old actress had to share with the mag:

On whether she’s seen a tangible change in the last year: “I do see a tangible change, or at least, I feel we’re on the precipice of one. There’s a correlation between [these] movements and the fact that there are more women behind the camera, in production, creating film.”

On the issues she is most passionate about: “All of them! Immigration, gun control. There’s been a lack of humanity, especially in the policies that alienate minorities, whether it be a person of color, an immigrant, or someone differently abled. The list goes on and on.”

On whose careers she admires: “Angela Bassett. She’s extremely academic and just an amazing human. Brian Tyree Henry, who plays Paper Boi in Atlanta. And Pharrell—he’s the all-around creative, in terms of his work as a producer, writer, content creator, and clothing designer.”
