Casey Affleck Shares What He's Learned from #MeToo Movement

Casey Affleck joins Tika Sumpter, Sissy Spacek, and Donald Glover on the red carpet for the premiere of their movie The Old Man & The Gun on Thursday (September 20) at the Paris Theatre in New York City.

The film’s star Robert Redford also walked the carpet, as did special guest Keegan-Michael Key. Casey was joined by his girlfriend Floriana Lima.

On the red carpet, Casey was asked by Variety to share what he has learned from the #MeToo movement. He previously faced accusations of sexual harassment back in 2010.

“I mean, look, if you haven’t learned anything from all of this, then you really haven’t been paying attention, and that goes for everybody,” Casey said. “It’s probably a conversation that deserves a little more time than standing on a red carpet. But I would say that one of the most important lessons is to try to remain as open as you can to other perspectives and to listen to other peoples experiences and, you know, take care of one another.”

FYI: Tika is wearing a Blumarine gown.

Casey Affleck Apologizes for 'Unprofessional' Behavior, Comments on Withdrawing From Oscars 2018 Ceremony

Casey Affleck is giving his first major interview where he’s admitting he contributed to an “unprofessional environment” on the set of his mockumentary film I’m Still Here back in 2010.

If you don’t know, he settled two lawsuits after accusations of sexual harassment emerged from the set.

“I contributed to that unprofessional environment and I tolerated that kind of behavior from other people and I wish that I hadn’t. And I regret a lot of that. I really did not know what I was responsible for as the boss. I don’t even know if I thought of myself as the boss. But I behaved in a way and allowed others to behave in a way that was really unprofessional. And I’m sorry,” Casey told the AP. “I wish I had found a way to resolve things in a different way. I hate that. I had never had any complaints like that made about me before in my life and it was really embarrassing and I didn’t know how to handle it and I didn’t agree with everything, the way I was being described, and the things that were said about me, but I wanted to try to make it right, so we made it right in the way that was asked at the time. And we all agreed to just try to put it behind us and move on with our lives, which I think we deserve to do, and I want to respect them as they’ve respected me and my privacy.”

In addition, Casey commented on choosing not to present the Best Actress Academy Award at the 2018 Oscars. It is tradition for the Best Actor Oscar winner of the previous year to present the award the following year.

“I think it was the right thing to do just given everything that was going on in our culture at the moment. And having two incredible women go present the best actress award felt like the right thing,” he added.

Casey Affleck's 'Manchester By the Sea' Director Says He Was 'Treated Abominably' During #MeToo Movement

Kenneth Lonergan is coming to the defense of Casey Affleck.

The Manchester by the Sea director shared in a recent interview that he believes the 42-year-old Oscar winning actor was treated harshly in the wake of the #MeToo Movement.

“I couldn’t be more all for the #MeToo movement and I couldn’t feel more strongly that he’s been treated abominably,” Kenneth told Variety. “It’s not good for anybody … People really don’t know what they are talking about, I’m afraid. And I’m afraid they are doing it in the name of a very good cause.”

Casey has faced allegations of sexual assault in the past, and accusations of inappropriate behavior on the set of I’m Still Here have resurfaced in the wake of the #MeToo movement.

Due to the backlash he was facing from the movement, Casey decided to back out of presenting the Best Actress award at the 2018 Oscars, which is standard tradition for the previous year’s Best Actor winner.
