Cynthia Erivo Dishes On Playing Aretha Franklin The Same Time as Jennifer Hudson

Cynthia Erivo is opening up about playing Aretha Franklin in a new interview, and also chatting about pal Jennifer Hudson playing the legendary singer in a different project.

“I felt like I had a responsibility to try and tell the story as fully and as truthfully and as honestly as it possibly could,” the 34-year-old actress and singer shared during an appearance on Daily Pop.

Cynthia will star on Genius as the singer, which focuses on Aretha‘s career as it skyrocketed in the 1960s and 1970s.

She called the role “daunting, yes. But also, really exciting.”

Cynthia also dished on what it’s been to star as Aretha on the small screen at the same time as Jennifer, who will play the singer in Respect.

“I’m greedy. So, any Aretha I can get, I’m getting,” she says, and adds that she wants “to hear Aretha coming out of Jennifer’s mouth. Those two have a really special relationship.”

She continued, “It’s something that we as Black women barely get so, to have her celebrated like this is so cool.”

Genius is set to premiere on National Geographic in four parts starting on Sunday, March 21 @ 9/8c. Check out the final trailer for the series here…

Jennifer Hudson Drops Full 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' Cover After Singing It in Mastercard Commercial

Jennifer Hudson has released her full cover of the classic song “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” after singing it in a recent Mastercard commercial.

The commercial was released a couple of weeks ago in support of Black women-owned businesses. The ad is a visual journey featuring Black women-owned businesses from across the country who have faced adversity and challenge and continue to thrive.

The 1967 staple “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” was made famous by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell and now Jennifer is putting her own spin on the classic.

Jennifer Hudson Opens Up About If She'll Reprise Her Role in 'Sex and The City' Reboot

Jennifer Hudson is reacting to the news about the Sex and the City reboot on HBO Max.

The 39-year-old singer appeared in the final movie for the series as Louise, Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant.

While her character did move back to St. Louis at the end of the movie, Jennifer would love to bring her back for the just announced reboot, And Just Like That…

Jennifer Hudson To Sing New Holiday Songs in Upcoming Christmas Movie

Jennifer Hudson has been tapped to star in an upcoming Christmas movie.

Deadline reports that the 39-year-old Oscar winner and singer will produce the pic alongside Jonathan Glickman. The untitled movie will be penned by Ira Madison III.

According to reports, the movie will see Jennifer performing classic holiday tunes and brand new Christmas songs as well.

Jennifer will play “a down-and-out singer whose life is turned upside down when she is mistaken for writing the next Christmas hit.”

Jennifer is a big fan of the holiday season and once admitted on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that she starts decorating super early.

The entertainer just released the new version of her song “Oh Santa!” – this time featuring Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson.

The new song is featured in Mariah‘s new Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special, which is available for streaming on Apple TV+ now.

During a new interview, Mariah talked about filming the “Oh Santa!” part of her special with Ariana and Jennifer.

“Visually, in the special, it really does feel like a girl group moment,” Mariah shared with Billboard. “I think we all had a good time with it. That was the fun part about it.”

During another recent interview, Mariah opened up about why she cares so much about Christmas.

Jennifer Hudson's 'Respect' Delayed by Seven Months Amid Pandemic

Jennifer Hudson‘s Respect is getting pushed back once again.

The upcoming Aretha Franklin biopic, which was already moved to January 15, 2021, will now be released on August 11, 2021, MGM announced on Tuesday (October 27).

The move comes as many studios scramble to figure out the best launch date for their projects amid the pandemic and theater restrictions due to social distancing regulations.

Here’s a plot summary: “following the rise of Aretha Franklin’s career from a child singing in her father’s church’s choir to her international superstardom, Respect is the remarkable true story of the music icon’s journey to find her voice.”

A trailer for the film was released back in June.

Jennifer Hudson might be part of another exciting musical project launching very soon, according to fan speculation.

Jennifer Hudson Pays Tribute to Aretha Franklin Two Years After Her Death

Jennifer Hudson is honoring Aretha Franklin.

The 38-year-old Oscar-winning entertainer took to Instagram on Sunday (August 16) to remember the late R&B legend on the two-year anniversary of her death.

“Something tells me that you are walking around heaven singing all day !” Jennifer wrote along with a black and white photo of Aretha. “I know u got your mansion, far more than just standing room ! Singing in the heavenly choir ! Still Can’t believe we lost you 2 years ago today . I truly miss hearing from you !”

Aretha passed away in 2018 at age 76 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Jennifer will be playing Aretha in the upcoming biopic titled Respect, which is scheduled to hit theaters in January 2021. You can check out the trailer here.
