Bebe Rexha Opens Up About Battling Anxiety In 'Teen Vogue'

Bebe Rexha is the latest cover star for Teen Vogue‘s special music issue series!

Here’s what the 28-year-old singer/songwriter had to share with the mag:

On battling anxiety: “I cry a lot. It’s tough. I have my own therapist and I have people I talk to. It’s an everyday battle, I feel. I don’t wanna feed into it, but my lifestyle is so crazy. When I first went to my first year of college, I was so intense. I didn’t know how to handle it and be around people. I was super anxious all the time. I was anxious when I was a little girl, I just didn’t know what it was. Finally, when I figured it out, I was like, ‘Oh. Finally, I understand. I have anxiety.’”

On topping Country Music charts: “I have immigrant parents, 100% Albanian. I’m not, like, a ‘country artist.’ “The country world is very…I think they want to preserve something, and I don’t disagree with them. But I feel like it’s cool now that different artists are [joining in].”

On her upcoming song “Don’t Get Any Closer”: “It’s really true to who I am. I think I have a very hard exterior, but when somebody gets to know me, there’s a soft spot to me. It’s really hard to get to that; I don’t let many people in. That’s what that song is about. It’s very vulnerable. It’s like, I’m scared to let anybody in because you’re gonna see the real, true me and you’re not gonna like me.”

Hayley Kiyoko Criticizes the Lyrics of Rita Ora's 'Girls': 'Just Downright Tone-Deaf'

Hayley Kiyoko is speaking out against Rita Ora‘s “Girls,” which features Charli XCX, Cardi B and Bebe Rexha.

The 27-year-old openly out “Girls Like Girls” singer issued a statement on Friday (May 11) upon the song’s release.

“It’s important for us artists to use our platforms to move the cultural needle forward, not backwards. There is a new song that came out today featuring a handful of well-known pop artists that has me overwhelmed with thoughts,” she wrote.

“I literally have a knot in my stomach right now. To be clear, I fully support other artists who freely express themselves and applaud male and female artists who are opening up more and more about their sexual identities. But every so often there come certain songs with messaging that is just downright tone-deaf, which does more harm than good for the LGBTQ+ community. A song like this just fuels the male gaze while marginalizing the idea of women loving women.”

“I know that wasn’t the intention of the artists on the song, but it’s the lack of consideration behind these lyrics that really get me. I don’t need to drink wine to kiss girls; I’ve loved women my entire life. This type of message is dangerous because it completely belittles and invalidates the very pure feelings of an entire community. I feel I have a responsibility to protect that whenever possible. We can and should do better.”
