'Grey's Anatomy' Will Take on Immigration & 'Broken' Medical Care System in Season 16

Grey’s Anatomy will tackle issues like immigration policies and the “broken” medical care system in the upcoming season.

Showrunner Krista Vernoff recently opened up about plans for season 16 of the ABC series.

In the May finale, (SPOILER ALERT) Ellen Pompeo‘s Meredith Grey’s boyfriend Andrew (Giacomo Gianniotti) took the blame for the insurance fraud she committed – and got fired for it.

“At this point in the season, we are having rich character discussions about the consequences of what Meredith did in committing insurance fraud and it’s because of our immigration policies but also because of our broken medical care system,” Krista told THR. “Because that story is very much in play, conversations about our broken medical care system are at play. In order to play that story through, we have to educate ourselves about the realities that doctors face and what works well in our country and what is broken. That is an essential part of our conversation this season but it all starts with character. It all starts with what are we going to do with Meredith now? She just got fired. Her medical license is potentially threatened by her decision and her boyfriend is in jail.”

Krista went on to discuss how the new season of Grey’s Anatomy might address gun control and gun reform.

Ellen Pompeo Calls Early 'Grey's Anatomy' Years 'Toxic,' But Here's Why She Didn't Quit

Ellen Pompeo spoke to Taraji P. Henson in a conversation with Variety, and she revealed that there are moments she wanted to quit her hit show Grey’s Anatomy.

“There were many moments,” Ellen said about wanting to quit Grey’s Anatomy over the years. “It’s funny: I never wanted off the bus in the year that I could get off. The first 10 years we had serious culture issues, very bad behavior, really toxic work environment. But once I started having kids, it became no longer about me. I need to provide for my family.”

“At 40 years old, where am I ever going to get this kind of money? I need to take care of my kids. But after Season 10, we had some big shifts in front of the camera, behind the camera. It became my goal to have an experience there that I could be happy and proud about, because we had so much turmoil for 10 years,” Ellen added.

She continued, “My mission became, this can’t be fantastic to the public and a disaster behind the scenes. Shonda Rhimes and I decided to rewrite the ending of this story. That’s what’s kept me. Patrick Dempsey left the show in season 11, and the studio and network believed the show could not go on without the male lead. So I had a mission to prove that it could. I was on a double mission.”

Ellen Pompeo Calls Out 'Bachelor' Creator Amid Kelly Ripa's Comments

Ellen Pompeo is calling out the creator of The Bachelor franchise, Mike Fleiss, after his comments regarding Kelly Ripa and her salary.

It all started when Kelly slammed The Bachelor franchise and said it “disgusts” her.

Mike then responded, “Easy, @KellyRipa … #TheBachelor franchise pays your salary!”

Well, Ellen Pompeo, who stars on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, responded, “Okay @fleissmeister… that’s some handle bro! Your show does NOT pay @KellyRipa salary. Also we don’t attack successful women on our network and men certainly cannot take credit for their success. Don’t get me started on your show cuz I’m a savage…. #bachelorsoooowhite”

The hashtag at the end of Ellen‘s tweet refers to the fact that The Bachelor has always been a white man.

Ellen Pompeo Gives Fans a Look Into Her Hollywood Home

Ellen Pompeo‘s home is featured in the May/June 2019 issue of Veranda Magazine, on newsstands today.

In the issue, Ellen and her longtime friend and interior designer, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, are showing everyone how to throw a Moroccan style dinner party in her 1930s Hollywood home.

Here’s what she had to share with the mag…

On why she sets a table with black and white colors: “I love black and white. It’s like a metaphor for life – you get darkness but you get so much light.”

On dinner party guests: “…that’s really what I’m after when I entertain. I love original spirits, people who bring life to the table.”

On why she favors Moroccan style to entertain: “I’ve always gravitated to Moroccan style. It’s cozy, and exotic and sexy. The pierced lights, the intricate tilework and patterns that each tell a story. I love how it instantly sets a mood.”
